Pani is the Punjabi word for water — the element of life, purity and hospitality in Punjab.
Meaning
Pani means water: the water we drink, cook with, wash with and grow our crops with. It is one of the first words every Punjabi child learns, and one of the most used words in the language.
The word reaches beyond the tap and the well. Pani stands for purity — clean water, clean hands, a clear conscience. And in the phrase "pani pilana" (to offer water), it stands for the most basic act of hospitality.
Origin and etymology
Pani comes from the Sanskrit paniya, meaning drinkable water. It is among the oldest everyday words in the language, shared across North India, and its meaning has not shifted in thousands of years.
The antiquity of the word matches the antiquity of its importance: in the land of five rivers, water has always been life.
Cultural context
Punjab is the land of five rivers, and pani runs through its identity. The wells, canals and rivers of Punjab shaped where villages stood and how fields were watered; the Green Revolution turned on tubewell water.
Offering pani to a guest is the first and most basic hospitality — before tea, before food, a glass of water. In Sikh tradition, amrit (sacred water) is central to initiation, and sarovars (sacred pools) surround the great gurdwaras. To waste pani is, in the Punjabi moral sense, a small sin.
