Shaam is the Punjabi word for evening — the soft close of day, for rest, lamps and togetherness.
Meaning
Shaam means evening: the time from late afternoon through sunset into the early night, when the day's work ends and lamps are lit. "Shaam" holds the day's gentlest hours — the cooling air, the returning cattle, the family gathering for the evening meal.
The word also carries a tender, poetic sense. "Shaam" in songs is the time of meetings and longings, of the sun's farewell colours and the first stars.
Origin and etymology
Shaam comes from the Persian sham (شام), meaning evening. Like many Persian time-words, it settled into Punjabi centuries ago and is now the natural, everyday word.
Punjabi also keeps the native "sandhya"-related forms in religious use, but for daily life, shaam is the word.
Cultural context
Evening in the Punjab village is a ceremony of return: farmers walk home from the fields, children are called in from play, and the courtyard fills with talk. The gurdwara's evening diwan and Rehras prayer mark the day's spiritual close.
Punjabi poetry loves the shaam. It is the hour of the lover's wait, the traveller's rest, the housewife's lamp at the door. To wish someone a pleasant shaam is to wish them the day's peaceful reward.
