Taara is the Punjabi word for a star — the night sky's jewels, and the mark of destiny.
Meaning
Taara means a star: the points of light in the night sky. In the plural, taare fill Punjabi poetry — the sky "taareyan naal bharea" (filled with stars) is the image of a clear country night.
The word also means fate or destiny. "Taara chamkna" (one's star shining) means good fortune; a person's "taare" are their luck, read in horoscopes and hoped for in blessings.
Origin and etymology
Taara comes from the Sanskrit tara, meaning star. It is an ancient word, shared across the Indo-Aryan languages, for one of humanity's oldest sights.
The double meaning — star and destiny — is equally old: people have read their futures in the stars for millennia.
Cultural context
On dark village nights, far from city lights, the taare are a ceiling of wonder. Elders point out constellations to children; travellers once navigated by them; and lovers in folk songs make wishes on them.
Astrology gives taare their serious side. Horoscopes (janam patri) map the stars at birth, and blessings wish that one's "taara buland rahe" — may your star stay high. The film star, too, is a "taara" — a star of another sky.
