Zameen is the Punjabi word for land — the earth beneath our feet and the fields that feed us.
Meaning
Zameen means land or earth. It is the ground we stand on, the soil of the fields, and — in its grandest sense — the earth itself. "Zameen" can be a small plot or the whole planet, depending on the sentence.
For a farming people, zameen is wealth, identity and mother all at once. To own zameen is to have roots; to lose it is among the deepest misfortunes.
Origin and etymology
Zameen comes from the Persian zamin (زمین), meaning earth or land. It entered Punjabi centuries ago and became the standard word, used from village boundaries to poetry about the planet.
The phrase "zameen-asmaan" (earth and sky) pairs it with its opposite, the heavens.
Cultural context
Land is the great subject of Punjabi rural life. Families measure themselves in acres; inheritance divides zameen among sons with ceremony and sometimes conflict; and the farmer's love for his land is a theme of countless songs.
Punjabi also calls the earth "dharti maa" (mother earth), giving zameen a sacred character. Martyrs' blood "waters" the zameen; poets call Punjab's zameen holy. The land remembers, and the land provides.
