Punjabi Man Dies Days After Mississauga Stabbing; Woman Arrested
A 29-year-old Punjabi man, Jagjit Singh Sandhu, has died days after being stabbed in the neck in Mississauga, Ontario, in an attack that followed his intervention in a confrontation outside a shelter, according to reports.
Peel Regional Police said officers responded to reports of a stabbing near Dixie Road and Dundas Street East at around 5:30 pm on Sunday, September 6. Sandhu was found with a serious stab wound to the neck and was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he was later declared brain dead. Life support was removed and he died on September 10.
What happened on September 6
According to his family, the incident began when another Punjabi man was targeted with xenophobic remarks by a man at a shelter near Dundas Street East. Sandhu's sister, Jaspreet Kaur, said her brother stepped in to help the man leave the area, which led to a verbal dispute. During the confrontation, a woman allegedly approached Sandhu from behind and stabbed him in the neck. Police have not confirmed whether the attack was racially motivated, and the claim should not be treated as established fact without an official finding.
Arrest and upgraded charges
Police initially arrested a man involved in the earlier altercation but later released him after determining he was not responsible for the stabbing. On September 7, officers arrested 42-year-old Lorena Sanchez of Mississauga, who had allegedly fled the scene on foot, and charged her with attempted murder. She was held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton. After Sandhu's death, the Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau took over the investigation and the charge against Sanchez was upgraded to second-degree murder.
Family questions Canada's safety
Kaur released a video on social media after the attack, raising serious questions about law and order and policing in Canada. The death has sent shockwaves through the Punjabi community in the Greater Toronto Area, one of the largest Punjabi diaspora hubs in the world.
