India Beat Pakistan 4-3 in Asian Games Hockey Thriller, Reach Final
India survived a stunning Pakistan fightback to beat their arch-rivals 4-3 in a pulsating men's hockey semifinal at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya on Thursday, booking a place in the gold-medal match on October 3.
The defending champions looked in complete control after racing to a 3-0 lead, but Pakistan roared back to level the scores at 3-3 before Abhishek Nain struck with less than a minute remaining — a deflected effort that sealed one of the most dramatic India-Pakistan encounters of recent years.
Harmanpreet's double sets the tone
Captain Harmanpreet Singh fired India ahead in the fifth minute with a drag-flick off a penalty corner and doubled the lead in the 13th minute from another set-piece. Sukhjeet Singh made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute after a fine pass from Shilanand Lakra on the left of the goal-line, and India appeared to have one foot in the final.
Pakistan's stunning comeback
Pakistan refused to fold. Captain Abu Mahmood pulled one back from a penalty corner before half-time, Hannan Shahid reduced the deficit further in the third quarter, and early in the final quarter Waheed Rana completed the comeback to make it 3-3, silencing the Indian supporters and setting up a nerve-shredding finish.
Abhishek delivers at the death
With a shootout looming, India found one last opening. Abhishek's effort from the edge of the circle took a deflection off Pakistan defender Sufiyan and beat goalkeeper Ali Raza, sending the Indian bench into delirium. The win extended India's unbeaten run against Pakistan to 21 matches — they have not lost to their neighbours since the 2016 South Asian Games final. The match also marked a milestone for veteran forward Mandeep Singh, who earned his 300th international cap.
Gold-medal match on October 3
India will face the winner of the second semifinal between South Korea and Malaysia in the final on October 3. Notably, both the Indian men's and women's teams have reached the Asian Games final in the same edition for the first time since 1998.
