Over the weekend, protests called by youth groups including the Cockroach Janta Party saw mass detentions; leaders such as Mamata Banerjee and Pinarayi Vijayan were among those detained. Rahul Gandhi alleged protesters were beaten by police and "BJP goons"; Kharge spoke of an "undeclared emergency". Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said Monday's march is "not a political one" but meant to protect people's right to vote.
