At least 19 people were killed and about 25 injured in a stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Saturday evening, according to reports from The Hindu, Hindustan Times, The Times of India and India Today. Early reports that night had put the toll at 17 and then 18.

What happened at Chorbagan

Kolkata Police said the stampede occurred at around 7.40 pm at the exit gate of the Sarada Park (Chor Bagan) pandal in the Girish Park police station area, as heavy crowds gathered during rain on Saptami evening. All the injured were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, the police said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said 17 people were brought dead to the hospital at first and that a seven-year-old girl was among the dead. Later updates from The Hindu and Hindustan Times raised the toll to 19. Adhikari said the incident appeared to follow an announcement made by the organisers on loudspeakers.

The Indian Express reported that locals blamed narrow lanes, too few trained volunteers, the sudden rain and an alleged announcement warning that the pandal might collapse if the crowd was not controlled. These accounts were still being checked, and some visitors alleged inadequate police arrangements. Eyewitnesses told NDTV the entry and exit gates were narrow and the area was poorly lit.

Action and compensation

Adhikari said police had detained the puja organisers and the private security guards hired for crowd control, and that a fact-finding committee would investigate, with CCTV footage and forensic teams assisting. "People's lives are more important than the puja theme," he told reporters, appealing to all puja committees to fix entry and exit points. Police asked several major pandals to close temporarily.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each victim and Rs 50,000 for each injured person, according to The Indian Express. The Hindu reported that the state announced Rs 25 lakh ex gratia. Home Minister Amit Shah cancelled his programmes in the state on Sunday to visit the injured and the families, Adhikari said.
