Gangster Afridi Deported from Ethiopia

Punjab Police have brought back wanted gangster Gurwinder Singh, alias Afridi, from Ethiopia after a 10-month international manhunt, in what police describe as the first time the state has secured the return of a fugitive from an African country. Afridi landed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday and is being escorted to Punjab by an Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) team for questioning.

How was Afridi tracked down?

The operation, codenamed Operation SHAHID, was run by the AGTF in coordination with the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) of Punjab's Counter Intelligence wing, with support from central agencies and foreign partners. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav announced the breakthrough in a post on X on Sunday, saying the 10-month manhunt had ended with Afridi's deportation from Ethiopia. Police said the AGTF team reached Delhi on Sunday morning with Afridi in custody and is bringing him to Punjab for questioning.

What is Afridi accused of?

Police describe Afridi as a key kingpin of the Doni Bal-Prabh Dassuwal gang, a syndicate linked to organised crime across Punjab. He is wanted in 35 cases, including murder, targeted killings and extortion-related shootings, according to India Today. Preliminary investigation indicates he was directing targeted killings and extortion-related firing incidents in Punjab from abroad while sheltering in Ethiopia. The Punjab government had announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for information leading to his arrest.

Afridi is a resident of Tut village in Tarn Taran district. His name first surfaced in connection with a church attack in Tarn Taran on August 31, 2022, after a suspect arrested in June 2024 named him as part of the conspiracy. Investigators say his arrest could open up several pending cases in which shooters acted on instructions received from abroad.

Why does the return matter?

The deportation is significant because it shows Punjab Police can now reach fugitives hiding far beyond the usual routes through North America, Europe or West Asia. It follows the deportation of two Khalistan Zindabad Force-linked operatives from Malaysia in June, and police say more such operations are in progress. For gangsters who have treated foreign soil as a safe base from which to order killings and extortion calls back home, the message is that distance no longer guarantees safety.

Afridi will be questioned by the AGTF about the gang's operations, its shooters and its funding channels in Punjab and abroad.
