India on Saturday summoned the Chargé d'Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission and lodged a strong protest over what it described as the continued facilitation of illegal cross-border infiltration from Pakistan, escalating the diplomatic fallout from a border firing incident in Punjab earlier this week.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also rejected what it called the "baseless and motivated" allegations by Pakistan regarding an incident in Punjab's Ferozepur sector along the International Border on Friday, October 2.
What India told Pakistan
According to the MEA, three individuals had crossed into Indian territory and continued moving towards the border fence despite multiple warnings from the Border Security Force to return to Pakistan. The ministry said the BSF was compelled to open fire after the three posed what it described as an imminent security threat.
New Delhi said the incident highlighted a "clear pattern" of repeated cross-border movement by armed narcotics syndicates operating from Pakistan. The Pakistani government was urged to investigate the cross-border infiltration and drug-smuggling activities, as well as the alleged complicity of Pakistan's border-guarding forces, and to take remedial measures.
The Ferozepur incident
Pakistan had alleged that Indian forces used unprovoked and disproportionate force against civilians in the Ferozepur sector on October 2, and demanded an investigation and disciplinary action. India flatly rejected that version, insisting that repeated warnings were issued before force was used and that the incident was part of a pattern of infiltration attempts along the Punjab border.
The MEA further called on Pakistan to respect the sanctity of the International Border, strictly observe relevant bilateral arrangements, mandate its forces to exercise effective control to prevent unauthorised movement from its side, and take definitive measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
Rising diplomatic heat
The back-to-back summons mark a sharp uptick in tensions between the two countries over their 553-kilometre shared border in Punjab. While both sides have used diplomatic channels to register their objections, the conflicting narratives — civilians killed, as Islamabad maintains, versus infiltrators engaged after warnings, as New Delhi insists — leave the facts of the border incidents contested.
The identities of the two men killed in the Tarn Taran firing on Friday were still being ascertained by Indian authorities as of Saturday, and no further details of the Ferozepur incident had been made public beyond the MEA's statement.

ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ ਮੰਤਰਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਤਿੰਨ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਾਖਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਸੀਮਾ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਬਲ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਾਪਸ ਮੁੜਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਚੇਤਾਵਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਸਰਹੱਦੀ ਵਾੜ ਵੱਲ ਵਧਣਾ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ। ਮੰਤਰਾਲੇ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਖ਼ਤਰਾ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਤਾਂ ਬੀ.ਐੱਸ.ਐੱਫ. ਨੂੰ ਗੋਲੀ ਚਲਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਮਜਬੂਰ ਹੋਣਾ ਪਿਆ।
ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਨੇ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਚਲ ਰਹੇ ਹਥਿਆਰਬੰਦ ਨਸ਼ਾ ਤਸਕਰ ਸਿੰਡੀਕੇਟਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਸਰਹੱਦ ਪਾਰ ਹਰਕਤ ਦੇ "ਸਾਫ਼ ਪੈਟਰਨ" ਨੂੰ ਉਜਾਗਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਹੱਦ ਪਾਰ ਘੁਸਪੈਠ ਅਤੇ ਨਸ਼ਾ ਤਸਕਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਸਰਹੱਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਬਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਥਿਤ ਮਿਲੀਭੁਗਤ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਧਾਰਾਤਮਕ ਕਦਮ ਚੁੱਕਣ ਦੀ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ।
