State procurement agencies began buying paddy at mandis across Punjab this week, with the first arrivals reported in Ludhiana, Patiala and Sangrur districts.
Farmers’ unions have asked for payments to reach bank accounts within 48 hours and for more covered storage, saying last year’s delays left grain in the open when rain arrived.
Officials said the harvest is expected to peak in the last week of October.
