The state government will open 500 health centres in villages over the next two years, the health department said on Thursday. The first 100 are due to open by December.
Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur and Ferozepur, the three border districts with the fewest clinics per head, will get the first centres. Each is planned with one doctor, two nurses and a pharmacist.
Basic tests, medicines and vaccinations will be free. Recruitment for about 1,500 posts is expected to begin next month.
Opposition parties have asked the government to publish the budget for the scheme and a timeline for staffing, saying earlier clinics were left short of doctors.

ਤਰਨ ਤਾਰਨ, ਗੁਰਦਾਸਪੁਰ ਅਤੇ ਫ਼ਿਰੋਜ਼ਪੁਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਮਿਲਣਗੇ। ਹਰ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਡਾਕਟਰ, ਦੋ ਨਰਸਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਫਾਰਮਾਸਿਸਟ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
ਜਾਂਚ, ਦਵਾਈਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਟੀਕਾਕਰਨ ਮੁਫ਼ਤ ਹੋਣਗੇ। ਲਗਭਗ 1,500 ਅਸਾਮੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਭਰਤੀ ਅਗਲੇ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।
ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਪਾਰਟੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਯੋਜਨਾ ਦਾ ਬਜਟ ਅਤੇ ਭਰਤੀ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਂ-ਸੀਮਾ ਜਨਤਕ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
