The Congress party on Friday appointed former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring with immediate effect. The announcement, signed by AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal, brings an end to days of speculation over a leadership change in the party's Punjab unit.

The change at the top

Warring stepped down earlier on Friday after meeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi, where he formally handed in his resignation. He had led the state unit since 2022, taking over from Navjot Singh Sidhu. In a post on X, Warring congratulated his successor, writing: "Congratulations to Sardar Pargat ji for being appointed as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. My best wishes."

The Congress also appreciated Warring's contributions during his tenure and clarified that the working presidents, chairpersons and co-chairpersons of various election-related committees in Punjab will continue in their existing roles. No other organisational changes were announced at this stage.

AICC Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot also congratulated Pargat Singh, expressing hope that under his leadership the party would deliver an outstanding performance in the 2027 Punjab assembly elections. "I hope that under your leadership, the party will deliver an outstanding performance in the upcoming assembly elections," Pilot said, adding that Pargat Singh would carry forward the vision of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi to the people with "complete dedication and loyalty."

Who is Pargat Singh?

Pargat Singh, 61, is the MLA from Jalandhar Cantt and a former cabinet minister in Punjab, where he held the sports, youth affairs, NRI affairs and education portfolios under chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi. A full-back who captained the Indian men's hockey team at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics, he is one of India's most recognisable sporting figures and has been honoured with the Padma Shri and the Arjuna Award.

He served as an SP in the Punjab Police before entering politics, and has been with the Congress since 2017. His selection puts a clean, widely recognised face at the head of the state unit at a time when the party is trying to rebuild its grassroots organisation.

What it means for the 2027 assembly elections

The leadership change comes with the 2027 Punjab assembly election on the horizon and the AAP firmly in power in the state. The BJP has also been working to expand its base in Punjab, making the opposition space increasingly contested.

By choosing a former sports captain with ministerial experience, the Congress high command appears to be betting on discipline, team-building and a non-factional image to steady the unit after a period of internal churn. Whether the new president can translate that goodwill into an organisational revival on the ground will be the real test in the months ahead.
