ਕੁਲਵਿੰਦਰ ਬਿੱਲਾ: ਮਾਨਸਾ ਦਾ ਗਾਇਕ

Kulwinder Billa (born 2 February 1984) is a Punjabi singer and actor from Mansa in the Malwa region of Punjab, India. He first became famous as the 'Bluetooth singer', after a demo song he recorded on a mobile phone spread from handset to handset across Punjab, and he went on to build a long career of hit songs such as Time Table, Palazzo and Chakkwein Suit, alongside film roles in Subedar Joginder Singh and Parahuna.

Early life and education in Mansa

He was born Kulwinder Singh on 2 February 1984 in Mansa, Punjab, and grew up in a village in Mansa district. His father is Maggar Singh and his mother is Gurjeet Kaur. Unlike many Punjabi singers who left studies early, Billa kept going in the classroom: he studied at SD College in Barnala and then at Punjabi University, Patiala, where his qualifications run from a BA and MA through an MPhil to a PhD. That academic background, rare in the Punjabi music industry, is a point of pride in his story.

Music ran alongside the degrees. In 2006 he took part in the singing reality show Awaaz Punjab Di, an early taste of the stage, but the real turning point came in his college years, when a professor told him he sang well and he recorded a dummy song to prove it.

How did Kulwinder Billa become the Bluetooth singer?

The nickname came from a single song, Kale Rang Da Yaar. Billa first recorded it on a Motorola phone as a demo for his professor. He made a few CDs, and he also sent the song to a friend over Bluetooth. In the years before cheap mobile internet, songs travelled in Punjab exactly that way, phone to phone, and Kale Rang Da Yaar travelled further than most. People who had never seen his face knew his voice, and they called him the Bluetooth singer. The name stuck for the rest of his career.

His formal recording career began with the album Koi Khaas in 2010, followed by Punjab in 2012 and Fer Toh Punjab in 2014, with later albums including Chehre, Addiyaan Chuk Chuk and Sucha Soorma in 2021.

Time Table, Palazzo and the hit years

The singles years made him a star across Punjab and the diaspora. Time Table in 2015 reached number 3 on the UK Asian chart, and its sequel Time Table 2, produced by Laddi Gill, went to number 1. Chakkwein Suit, made with Tigerstyle, also charted in the UK. In 2017 came Palazzo with Aman Hayer, one of his biggest songs, and Angreji Wali Madam with Dr Zeus. Mere Yaar and Tich Button followed in 2018, and Dil Lai La, written by Jaani, in 2021.

He kept the album format alive alongside the singles, releasing a full album also titled Time Table in 2015 and returning with Sucha Soorma in 2021. His singing style is rooted in the folk tradition of Malwa: a strong, open voice, clean diction and songs built around everyday Punjabi life, weddings, suits and tractors rather than imported pop themes. That grounding is a large part of why his audience has stayed loyal for well over a decade.

Acting: Subedar Joginder Singh and Parahuna

Billa moved into films in 2018 with the war biopic Subedar Joginder Singh, the story of the Param Vir Chakra winner of the 1962 war, in which he played the soldier Ajaib Singh alongside ਗਿੱਪੀ ਗਰੇਵਾਲ. The same year he took his first lead role in the comedy Parahuna, opposite ਵਾਮਿਕਾ ਗੱਬੀ, playing Janta, a young man caught up in the chaos of a Punjab wedding house.

He returned to the screen in the film Television in 2022, a story set in the era when a single television set served a whole village, and in Chhalle Mundiyan the same year. Acting has remained a second string rather than a replacement: the singing career continues alongside the films.

Honours and personal life

In 2020 the Government of Punjab gave Billa its Youth Icon Award, recognising a career that had carried Mansa's name across the world. He is married to Ravinder Kaur, and the couple have a daughter, Sanjh, and a son, Jind Singh Jassar, born in 2023. A fitness enthusiast and an admirer of Bhagat Singh, he often posts about both, and his story, from a phone demo in a college classroom to award stages, remains one of the most unusual routes into Punjabi music.
