Shehnaaz Gill: Bigg Boss to Ikk Kudi

Shehnaaz Kaur Gill is a Punjabi actor, singer and model, born on 27 January 1994 and raised in Punjab. She began in Punjabi music videos in 2015, became a national star as second runner-up on Bigg Boss 13, starred in the hit Honsla Rakh, moved into Hindi films, and in 2025 led and produced the Punjabi film Ikk Kudi.

Early life and education

Shehnaaz Kaur Gill was born on 27 January 1994 and raised in Punjab, in a Sikh family. Her younger brother, Shehbaz Badesha, has also appeared on reality television. Biographical profiles report her schooling at Dalhousie Hilltop School in Dalhousie, followed by a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Lovely Professional University in ਫਗਵਾੜਾ. The ਬਿਆਸ and Amritsar side of Majha is the home country she is most often linked with, and Punjab stayed at the centre of her public identity even after her work took her to Mumbai.

From childhood she wanted to sing and act, and she performed whenever she got the chance. That confidence, more than any formal training, became her calling card: producers and audiences alike describe a performer who is the same unfiltered person on camera and off it. It was the quality that Punjabi music video makers spotted first, and that a national television audience would later take to its heart.

Music videos and first films

Gill's screen career began in 2015 with the music video Shiv Di Kitaab, sung by Gurvinder Brar. Through 2016 she appeared in a run of Punjabi song videos, among them Majhe Di Jatti and Pindaan Diyan Kudiyaan, and in 2018 she featured in Garry Sandhu's Yeah Baby Refix. The Punjabi music industry works as an informal film school, and by the end of those years Gill was one of its most recognisable young faces.

Her acting debut came in the Punjabi film Sat Shri Akaal England in 2017, in the role of Sonia Khanna. Two more Punjabi films followed in 2019: Kala Shah Kala, in which she played Taaro opposite Binnu Dhillon and ਸਰਗੁਨ ਮਹਿਤਾ, and Daaka, in which she played Pushpa. The roles were supporting ones, but they put her in front of film audiences just before the opportunity that changed everything arrived in September 2019.

How did Shehnaaz Gill become famous?

Shehnaaz Gill became famous through Bigg Boss 13, the reality show she entered in September 2019. On the launch she introduced herself with the tag Punjab ki Katrina Kaif, and over the season her humour, candour and emotional openness made her the contestant viewers talked about most. When the season ended in February 2020 she finished as second runner-up, behind winner Sidharth Shukla, and left the house a national celebrity with a large and loyal fan following.

Her first singles arrived while she was still inside the house: Veham came first, followed by Sidewalk, Range and Ronda Ali Peti, establishing her as a singer in her own right and not only a video performer. In February 2020 she also appeared on the matchmaking show Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, which ended early when production stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic. A run of popular music videos followed, including Bhula Dunga, Keh Gayi Sorry with ਜੱਸੀ ਗਿੱਲ, Kurta Pajama, Waada Hai, Shona Shona and Fly with Badshah, keeping her in constant public view through 2020 and 2021.

Honsla Rakh and the move to Hindi films

In October 2021 Gill returned to Punjabi cinema as Sweety in Honsla Rakh, opposite ਦਿਲਜੀਤ ਦੋਸਾਂਝ and ਸੋਨਮ ਬਾਜਵਾ. The family comedy was a major box office success: trade reports put its worldwide takings at about Rs 17.5 crore in the first three days alone, a record opening for a Punjabi film at the time. For Gill it proved that her television fame could carry a theatrical hit, and it remains the Punjabi film she is most identified with.

Hindi films followed in 2023. She played Sukoon in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, the Salman Khan production that served as her Bollywood debut, and Rushi Kalra in Thank You For Coming, an ensemble comedy led by Bhumi Pednekar. Thank You For Coming had its gala world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 15 September 2023, where it was the only Hindi feature film given a gala premiere that year, before its worldwide theatrical release on 6 October 2023. In 2024 she made a special appearance in the song Sajna Ve Sajna in Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video.

Singer, producer and public image

Gill has kept recording alongside acting. Her singles include Tu Yaheen Hai in 2021, the Haryanvi track Ghani Syaani with MC Square in 2022, and Dhup Lagdi in 2024, and she has continued to appear in other artists' videos, including Guru Randhawa's Moon Rise and Yo Yo Honey Singh's Sheeshe Wali Chunni in 2025. The singing matters to her story: she entered the industry through songs, and her own voice still anchors her connection with the Punjabi audience.

In 2025 she took the biggest step of her career so far. Ikk Kudi, written and directed by Amarjit Singh Saron, gave her a double role, as Simmi in the present day and as her grandmother Tejo in a 1950s strand, and it was also her debut as a producer, through Shehnaaz Gill Productions with Raaya Picturez and Amor Film. A reality show discovery backing and leading her own Punjabi feature marked her arrival as a filmmaker, not only a star for hire.

Her public standing has been recognised in the popular press: she was ranked in the Times lists of the most desirable women on television in 2019 and 2020, appeared on a Filmfare digital cover in 2021, and received the Promising Fresh Face award at the ET Inspiring Women Awards the same year. She went on to win style honours at the Pinkvilla awards in 2023 and 2024.

Legacy

Gill's career is the clearest recent example of a Punjabi music video performer converting reality television fame into a durable film career across two industries. Many Bigg Boss contestants fade within a season; she used the platform to move into hit Punjabi films, Hindi features, her own singles and finally film production. For young performers from small town Punjab, her route, from Majha to Mumbai without a film family behind her, has become a reference point.
