Sunil Dutt (6 June 1929 to 25 May 2005) was an actor, producer, director and politician from Nakka Khurd village in Jhelum district, Punjab, who rose from a bus company desk and a radio microphone to become one of Hindi cinema's leading men. As Birju in Mother India he played Indian cinema's first great rebel son, and he went on to star in Sujata, Mujhe Jeene Do, Waqt, Khandan and Padosan, to act in Punjabi religious films, and to walk some 2,000 kilometres from Bombay to Amritsar for peace in Punjab in 1987. India gave him the Padma Shri in 1968, and he died in office as the country's Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports.

Early life in Nakka Khurd and a Partition rescue

He was born Balraj Dutt on 6 June 1929 in Nakka Khurd, a village in Jhelum district in the Punjab of British India, now in Pakistan, to Punjabi Hindu parents, Diwan Raghunath Dutt and Kulwanti Devi Dutt. The family were landlords, and he had a younger brother, Som, and a younger sister, Raj Rani. His father died when he was five. He was eighteen when Partition came in 1947, and a Muslim friend of his father's named Yakub saved the whole family and helped them reach safety in India. Some reference pages give his birth year as 1928 or 1930; this page follows 1929, the year carried by his Lok Sabha record as cited on his main reference page and by IANS in its birth anniversary report.

The family resettled at Mandauli, a small village on the Yamuna in what is now Yamunanagar district, Haryana. Dutt spent time with his mother in Lucknow, then moved to Bombay, where he studied at Jai Hind College, worked in the BEST transport undertaking, and graduated with an honours degree in history in 1954.

Radio Ceylon, a new name and Mother India

His first stage was radio. Dutt hosted Lipton Ki Mehfil on the Hindi service of Radio Ceylon, and the director Ramesh Saigal, who had met him in 1953, offered him a film role. Dutt asked to finish his education first, and after graduating he made his debut in Saigal's Railway Platform in 1955. To avoid confusion with the established actor Balraj Sahni, Saigal gave the other Balraj a new screen name: Sunil Dutt.

Stardom arrived in two steps. B. R. Chopra's Ek Hi Raasta in 1956 was a major success, and Mehboob Khan's Mother India in 1957 became the highest grossing film of its year. Dutt played Birju, the rebellious, short tempered son of Nargis's Radha, a part later critics have called Hindi cinema's first anti hero. On the set, a fire broke out and, by the account carried in his reference pages, Dutt went through the flames to bring Nargis out. They married on 11 March 1958 and had three children, among them the actor Sanjay Dutt and Priya Dutt, who later followed her father into Parliament.

What films made Sunil Dutt a star?

Through the late 1950s and the 1960s Dutt was one of the busiest leading men in Bombay. He played a reformer in Sadhna in 1958, the lead opposite Nutan in Bimal Roy's Sujata in 1959, and a dacoit in Mujhe Jeene Do in 1963, which won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor. In 1964 he directed and acted in Yaadein, an experimental film in which he is the only actor on screen; it won a National Film Award and a place in the Guinness records for the fewest actors in a narrative film. Khandan in 1965, in which he played a paralysed family man, brought his second Filmfare Best Actor award, and the same year he appeared in the ensemble hit Waqt. Mera Saaya in 1966, Milan and Hamraaz in 1967, and the comedy Padosan in 1968, where his simple hearted Bhola broke his rugged image, kept him at the top into a second decade.

The 1970s changed his register rather than ending it. Heera in 1973, Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye in 1974, Zakhmee in 1975, Nagin in 1976 and Jaani Dushman in 1979 were all major successes, often with Dutt in action or dacoit roles. Alongside them he produced and directed the desert tragedy Reshma Aur Shera, a commercial failure that critics later treated as a cult film. In 1981 he launched his son Sanjay in Rocky. His last film, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. in 2003, cast him as the strict, loving father of his real life son, and reviewers called the pairing one of the most genuine father and son performances in Hindi cinema.

The Punjabi films

The Jhelum born star also came home to Punjabi on screen. In the 1970s he acted in a series of Punjabi religious films: Man Jeete Jag Jeet in 1973, in which he played Baghel Singh, also called Bagga Daku, in a film whose songs, sung by singers including Mohammad Rafi, draw their words from the Gurbani; Dukh Bhanjan Tera Naam in 1974, where he appeared as a sadhu; and Sat Sri Akal in 1977, in which he played Hari Singh, an air force pilot. For Punjabi audiences these films, devotional in tone and modest in scale beside his Hindi hits, remain the most direct link between the Bombay star and the land of his birth.

Politics, the peace march and public work

After Nargis died of pancreatic cancer in 1981, Dutt founded the Nargis Dutt Foundation in her memory to help cancer patients, work he carried on for the rest of his life. He was Sheriff of Bombay in 1982, joined the Indian National Congress, and was first elected to Parliament from Mumbai North West in 1984, winning the seat five times in all. His years in politics were interrupted in the early 1990s by his campaign to free his son Sanjay, who had been arrested over an illegally held rifle after the Bombay blasts; he returned to Parliament in 1999 and again in 2004.

His most remembered public act had nothing to do with elections. In 1987, at the height of the Punjab militancy, Dutt and his daughter Priya walked the Mahashanti Padyatra, a peace march of about 2,000 kilometres over 76 days from Bombay to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, holding more than 500 roadside meetings for communal harmony on the way. He later walked from Nagasaki to Hiroshima against nuclear weapons. In interviews he kept returning to the same appeal, recorded by IANS from an archival Prasar Bharati conversation: that India's many religions, languages and folk traditions are its greatest treasure, and that no one should divide the country for selfish ends.

Honours and later life

The Government of India awarded Dutt the Padma Shri in 1968. Filmfare gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995, and his peace and harmony work brought the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award in 1998, among other honours. In May 2004 he became Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports in Manmohan Singh's government, the office he held until his death.

Sunil Dutt died of a heart attack in his sleep at his home in Bandra, Mumbai, on 25 May 2005, aged 75, and was cremated with full state honours. His daughter Priya won the parliamentary seat he had held, keeping it until 2014.

Legacy

Dutt's screen legacy runs from Birju's rage in Mother India to Bhola's innocence in Padosan and the one man experiment of Yaadein, a range few leading men of his generation attempted. His public legacy is rarer still: a film star who used fame first for cancer patients, then for Parliament, and, when his home province was burning, for a two month walk to Amritsar. Born in a Jhelum village and rescued in Partition by his father's Muslim friend, he spent a lifetime insisting, in films and on foot, that Punjab and India hold together.
