Bathinda district is a district in the Malwa region of southern Punjab, India, with its headquarters in Bathinda city. It covers 3,353 square kilometres, counted 1,388,525 people in Census 2011, and joins an ancient fort city and the Sikh takht at Talwandi Sabo to a modern belt of cotton fields, power stations, a refinery and AIIMS.
Where is Bathinda district?
Bathinda district is in the southern part of Punjab, in the heart of the Malwa region, lying between about 29 degrees 33 minutes and 30 degrees 36 minutes north latitude and 74 degrees 38 minutes and 75 degrees 46 minutes east longitude. The Central Ground Water Board describes it as a flat alluvial plain, sloping gently to the south west, with scattered sand dunes in the south and mostly sandy soils. It is the Punjab district closest to the Thar desert, and its climate is hot and dry: the Board records normal annual rainfall of about 408 mm, most of it in the monsoon months from July to September.
The district is bordered by Sirsa and Fatehabad districts of Haryana in the south, by Sangrur and Mansa in the east, by Moga and Barnala in the north east, and by Faridkot and Sri Muktsar Sahib in the north west. Its fields are watered mainly by the Bathinda branch and the Kotla branch of the Sirhind Canal, alongside tubewells. For administration the district today has four tehsils, Bathinda, Rampura Phul, Talwandi Sabo and Maur, and nine development blocks. Census 2011, taken before Maur became a tehsil, recorded three tahsils, eight blocks, 12 towns and 281 villages, 279 of them inhabited.
Census 2011 counted 1,388,525 people, a density of 414 per square kilometre and growth of 17.34 percent over 2001. About 64 percent of residents lived in villages and 36 percent in towns. Literacy stood at 68.28 percent, and the sex ratio was 868 females for every 1,000 males. Sikhs formed 70.89 percent of the population and Hindus 27.41 percent, and Punjabi is the language of home, school and administration.
A frontier fort and the making of the district
Bathinda is one of the oldest settled places in Punjab. The District Census Handbook notes that its early history is obscure: the town appears in early chronicles as Tabarhindh, and also as Batrind. Local tradition links the name to the Bhatti Rajputs who held this country, and the same tradition is retold for the fort: its bricks are said to go back to the Kushana period, and a local ruler, Raja Dab, is believed to have built it. The place stood on the road from the north west into the rich Ganga valley, so armies kept coming to it. The Handbook records that Mahmud of Ghazni besieged the fort in 1004, when the town was a capital of the Hindushahi rulers, and that after the battles of Tarain in 1191 and 1192 the area passed under Muhammad Ghori and then the Delhi sultans.
The fort, Qila Mubarak, still stands in the heart of Bathinda city and is recognised as a monument of national importance maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is described as the oldest surviving fort in India, on its present site since about 1100 to 1200 AD. The Imperial Gazetteer counted 36 bastions and a height of about 118 feet. Its most told story belongs to the Delhi Sultanate: in April 1240 Razia Sultan, the first woman to rule Delhi, was imprisoned here by Altunia, the governor of Bathinda, who had rebelled against her. The Handbook says Altunia released her that August, married her, and marched with her towards Delhi; defeated, the two were killed on 13 October 1240.
In later centuries the country around Bathinda was dominated by the Sidhu Brar families descended from Chaudhary Phul, whose sons Tiloka and Rama aided Guru Gobind Singh. In 1754 Baba Ala Singh of Patiala took Qila Mubarak and renamed it Gobindgarh in honour of the Guru, and two gurdwaras inside the fort mark the Guru's visit in 1705. Most of the present district then formed part of Patiala State. The modern district came into existence with the formation of PEPSU in 1948, and PEPSU merged into Punjab in 1956. It became smaller on 13 April 1992, when Mansa district was formed out of the erstwhile Bathinda district.
Talwandi Sabo and Takht Sri Damdama Sahib
About 28 kilometres south east of Bathinda city stands Talwandi Sabo, home of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, one of the five takhts of Sikhism. Guru Gobind Singh reached here in 1705 after leaving Anandpur Sahib and fighting at Chamkaur Sahib and Muktsar, and he stayed for nearly a year. Damdama means a place to rest and take breath, and the rest turned into work: here the Guru prepared the revised and authentic version of the Adi Granth, adding the hymns of Guru Tegh Bahadur, transcribed by Bhai Mani Singh. That recension, the Damdami Bir, is the text honoured today as the Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Tegh Bahadur had called the place Guru Ki Kashi, a centre of learning, and scholars and copyists gathered here around the Guru, a character the town keeps through the Damdami Taksal tradition.
The takht was officially recognised as the fifth takht by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on 18 November 1966, and the Government of India declared it the fifth takht in April 1999 during the tercentenary of the Khalsa. Every year the Baisakhi fair here draws devotees in very large numbers, and the gurdwaras around the takht, including Manji Sahib, Likhansar Sahib and Jandsar Sahib, receive pilgrims through the year. For the district, Talwandi Sabo is both a living town of the cotton belt and one of the most important addresses in Sikh religious life.
Cotton, canals and the grain trade
Farming built modern Bathinda. The district sits in the south western cotton belt of Punjab, and cotton, called white gold across Malwa, has been its signature kharif crop for generations, alongside paddy and wheat. Canal water from the Sirhind system and tubewells made intensive farming possible on this dry plain, and the towns grew as mandis: Bathinda city grew around its grain market, and Rampura Phul, Maur, Goniana, Bhucho Mandi and Talwandi Sabo all trade in cotton and grain. Ginning and pressing units ring the towns, and the National Fertilizers Limited plant at Bathinda, which came up in 1974 alongside the thermal plant, supplies the same fields. In recent years pest attacks, especially whitefly and pink bollworm, and uncertain prices have pushed many farmers to shift cotton land to paddy, though cotton remains central to the district's identity and trade.
Power, a refinery and new industry
From the 1970s the district added heavy industry to its farms. The Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant at Bathinda, whose foundation stone was laid in 1969 and which began production in 1974, was one of the first large thermal stations in Punjab; the District Census Handbook describes its four units of 110 MW each, 440 MW in all. A second station followed at Lehra Mohabbat, about 22 kilometres from the city: the Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant runs four units, two of 210 MW and two of 250 MW, for 920 MW in all, drawing cooling water from the Bathinda branch of the Sirhind Canal. The district's biggest industrial arrival is the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery at Phullokhari village, near Raman Mandi and about 42 kilometres from Bathinda city. Run by HMEL, a joint venture of HPCL and Mittal Energy, it became operational in March 2012 with a capacity of 11.3 million tonnes a year, fed by a 1,017 kilometre pipeline from Mundra in Gujarat.
AIIMS, a central university and getting there
Two national institutions have changed the district's daily life. AIIMS Bathinda, a medical college and hospital working autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, became operational in 2019 on a campus of about 177 acres on the Bathinda to Dabwali road. It was planned as a 750 bed institute with 100 medical seats and 60 nursing seats, and its outpatient department opened in December 2019; patients now come from across Malwa and neighbouring Haryana. The Central University of Punjab, established in 2009 under the Central Universities Act, works from a 500 acre campus at Ghudda village, offering research led postgraduate and doctoral programmes and, since 2024, undergraduate courses as well.
Getting to Bathinda is straightforward. Bathinda Junction is one of the great railway junctions of northern India: the city's first line, to Hisar, was laid in 1890, and lines followed to Ambala, Delhi, Bikaner, Firozpur, Sri Ganganagar and Fazilka, so the junction handles both passengers and the freight of the mandis and the refinery. By road, national highways link it to Patiala, Barnala, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Dabwali and the Haryana towns to the south, and buses connect Bathinda city with Rampura Phul, Talwandi Sabo, Maur and the larger villages. The district today keeps both of its inheritances in view: an ancient fort and a Sikh takht on one side, and power stations, a refinery, a medical institute and a university on the other.
