Where is Bhulath Tehsil?
Bhulath Tehsil is a tehsil in the north of Kapurthala district in the Doaba region of Punjab, India, headquartered in the nagar panchayat town of Bhulath. The Census of 2011 counted 104,354 people across its two towns and 101 villages, on the plain between the Beas and the Sutlej.
Doaba, also called the Bist Doab or Jalandhar Doab, is the land between the Beas river to the north and the Sutlej to the south, and Kapurthala is one of its four districts. Bhulath is the northernmost and smallest of Kapurthala district's four tehsils, alongside Kapurthala, Phagwara and Sultanpur Lodhi. District tables from the 2011 Census give the tehsil an area of about 235 square kilometres and a density of 444 people per square kilometre, a settled farming countryside rather than an urban sprawl. Bhulath town stands about 25 kilometres north of Kapurthala city, the district headquarters, and about 35 kilometres from Jalandhar, the region's largest city.
For administration the tehsil is both a revenue unit and a sub-division of the district: the headquarters town holds a sub-division tehsil complex, a court complex and a police station. Rural development in its villages runs through the Nadala community development block, named in Census village records across the tehsil, and village affairs are handled by elected gram panchayats. Politically the area votes in the Bholath assembly constituency of the Punjab assembly and the Hoshiarpur parliamentary constituency.
The headquarters town of Bhulath
Bhulath town, also spelled Bholath, is a nagar panchayat town governed in 13 wards. The Census of 2011 counted 10,548 people in 2,235 households there, with a literacy rate of 80.95 percent and a sex ratio of 943 women per 1,000 men, both ahead of the district averages of that census. A local tradition recorded for the town links its name with Raja Bharat. Its recorded landmarks include a very old Krishan temple, and its schools include Christ the King Convent School, Satkartar International High School, Shishu Model Senior Secondary School and Young Petals Public School, which draw children from the surrounding villages.
The town works as the service centre of the tehsil: its bazaars, banks and offices serve the villages around it, and small workshops in the town are recorded as producing steel almirahs, air cooler bodies and wooden furniture. For most paperwork of daily life, from land records to schooling, Bhulath town is where the tehsil's villagers come first, before Kapurthala city.
Two towns and a hundred villages
The tehsil's second town is Begowal, a nagar panchayat of 11 wards about the same size as the headquarters: the 2011 Census counted 10,116 people there, with a sex ratio of 999 and a literacy rate of 76.13 percent. Together the two towns held 19.8 percent of the tehsil's people in 2011, which means four out of five residents of Bhulath Tehsil live in its villages. Nadala, which gives the development block its name, is listed in the district village directory as the largest village of the tehsil, and bank branches and ATMs cluster in Bhulath, Begowal and Nadala.
The villages themselves are the classic Doaba pattern: compact settlements set in their own farmland, each with its panchayat, school and places of worship. Bhadas, for example, counted 2,222 people in 511 households in 2011, sits about 5 kilometres from the tehsil headquarters, and reports its whole sown area as irrigated. The Jugti tehsil directory currently lists 95 place pages under Bhulath, and every one of them belongs to this same small world of towns, mandis and village roads.
Land, water and farming
Bhulath lies in the Bet side of Doaba, the river tract between the Beas and the Black Bein, where the soils are clay loam, loam or clay. The traditional crop rotations of this tract are paddy with wheat, maize with wheat, fodder with wheat and toria with wheat, and the village land records of the tehsil tell the same story: at Bhadas the recorded commodities are paddy, wheat and maize, the net sown area is fully irrigated, and tube wells are the recorded irrigation source. Across Kapurthala district the major crops are wheat, rice, sugarcane, potato and maize, and Bhulath's fields follow that district pattern.
Farming is therefore the tehsil's economy first and last: family farms growing the paddy and wheat rotation, fodder for dairy animals, and market work in the two towns that collect, repair and sell for the countryside. The flat, watered plain that made this corner of Doaba attractive to settlers centuries ago still decides how people here earn their living.
People, faith and the NRI connection
The 2011 Census recorded a literacy rate of 78.58 percent for the tehsil and a sex ratio of 973 women per 1,000 men, the highest of Kapurthala district's four tehsils. In Bhulath town the census counted Sikhs at 47.91 percent and Hindus at 46.08 percent, with a Christian minority of 4.38 percent, while Begowal town was 71.71 percent Sikh and 25.20 percent Hindu, so gurdwaras, temples and churches all stand within the tehsil's two towns and its villages.
Doaba is widely called the NRI hub of Punjab, because a large share of its people have migrated to North America, Europe and the Middle East over the decades, and Bhulath shares fully in that story: the headquarters town is described locally as an NRI area, with many people from the town and its surrounding villages settled abroad. Remittances, family homes built in the villages and sons and daughters returning for weddings and harvests are part of ordinary life across the tehsil.
Getting to Bhulath Tehsil
Bhulath town is about 25 kilometres by road from Kapurthala city and about 35 kilometres from Jalandhar, and buses are the everyday public transport of the tehsil, linking the headquarters with Begowal, Nadala and the villages as well as with the district city. The tehsil has no railway station of its own: the nearest station recorded for Bhulath town is Hamira, about 12 kilometres away, on the line toward Kapurthala and Jalandhar. For air travel, Adampur airport lies roughly 28 kilometres by air from the tehsil's eastern villages, with Amritsar's international airport the usual choice for the diaspora families who fly in and out of this NRI countryside.
