Brampton is a city of 656,480 people in Ontario, Canada, the ninth largest municipality in the country and the seat of Peel Region, just northwest of Toronto. Once famous as the Flower City for its greenhouse roses, it is now best known as home to the largest Punjabi and Sikh community outside India.
Where is Brampton?
Brampton is in southern Ontario, on the northwestern edge of the Greater Toronto Area, and it is a lower tier municipality within Peel Region. It borders Vaughan to the east, Halton Hills to the west, Caledon to the north and Mississauga to the south, with the Toronto neighbourhood of Etobicoke at its southeastern corner. The city covers 265.89 square kilometres at an elevation of about 218 metres, and Etobicoke Creek runs through its older downtown core.
The historic heart of the city is the Four Corners, the crossing of Queen Street and Main Street. Around it the modern city spreads out in planned suburbs, among them Bramalea in the east, Heart Lake in the north and Mount Pleasant in the northwest.
History: from crossroads village to Flower City
The land that is now Brampton was surrendered by the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation under Treaty 19, signed in October 1818. In 1834 John Elliott and William Lawson, both from Brampton in Cumberland, England, gave the young settlement the name of their home town. Brampton was incorporated as a village in 1853, with more than 500 residents, churches, a grammar school and farm implement works.
The Grand Trunk Railway arrived in 1856 and growth followed, as it did in most railway towns of the period. Brampton became the seat of Peel County in 1867, gaining a courthouse and jail, and it was incorporated as a town in 1873, with John Haggert as its first mayor. Edward Dale, who had arrived from Dorking, England, in 1863, built a flower nursery that grew into the largest cut flower business in North America, with 140 greenhouses and some 20 million blooms at its height. Other nurseries followed, 48 at the peak, and the town became known as the Flower Town of Canada.
The flower trade faded slowly through the twentieth century, and the Dale Estate itself closed in 1980, but the name stuck. A Flower Festival began in 1963, the city adopted a Flower City Strategy in 2002, and the Rose Theatre, opened in 2006, carries the theme into the present. The bigger change came in 1974, when Peel County became the Regional Municipality of Peel and Brampton became a city, absorbing the townships of Chinguacousy and Toronto Gore. Bramalea, planned in the late 1950s as Canada's first satellite community, came with them, and its name blends Brampton, Malton and the old English word lea, meaning meadow.
Why do so many Punjabis live in Brampton?
So many Punjabis live in Brampton because work, family networks and new housing pulled in the same direction for two generations. The 2021 census counted 656,480 residents, up 10.6 percent from 2016, which made Brampton the fastest growing of Canada's 25 largest municipalities in that period. People of South Asian origin numbered 340,815, or 52.4 percent of the city, making Brampton the first city in Canada where South Asians form a majority. Sikhs numbered 163,260, or 25.11 percent of residents, up from just 3.7 percent in 1991. Punjabi was the mother tongue of 141,005 people, 21.7 percent of the city, and 189,235 residents, 29.1 percent, could speak it, second only to English.
Brampton sits beside Toronto Pearson International Airport and around the trucking, warehousing and food businesses of Peel, industries where Punjabi newcomers found work, started companies and then sponsored relatives who settled nearby. New subdivisions offered larger houses than older Toronto neighbourhoods at prices families could reach, and each new gurdwara, Punjabi school program, radio station and shopping plaza made the next family's move easier. About three in five Brampton residents were born outside Canada, and the city is now often described, affectionately, as a mini Punjab.
Gurdwaras serve neighbourhoods across the city, and the best known in the area, Ontario Khalsa Darbar on Dixie Road, stands just across the city line in Mississauga, where it began in 1978 and opened its present building in 1989. April is Sikh Heritage Month, marked in Brampton with civic events, and in 2023 the city presented Gurbax Singh Malhi, Canada's first turban wearing Sikh member of Parliament, with the Key to the City. Each spring, Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan processions in Brampton and across Peel draw large crowds, with free food served along the route in the spirit of seva, or selfless service.
Places of interest
Downtown Brampton rewards a slow walk. Gage Park, the city's oldest park, was created after publisher Sir William J. Gage bought part of the Alderlea estate in 1902 and donated land for public use, and it sits steps from the Four Corners. The Dominion Building, with its clock tower on Queen Street East, is the downtown landmark shown in this page's hero image. The Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives, known as PAMA, sits nearby in the old courthouse complex, and the Rose Theatre anchors Garden Square.
Beyond downtown, Heart Lake Conservation Area offers trails and a lake beach in the north, and Chinguacousy Park mixes gardens, a greenhouse and a small ski hill. Professor's Lake, a former quarry turned recreation lake in the east end, is a summer favourite. The Punjabi plazas and sweet shops along Torbram Road and Airport Road show the city's newer identity at street level.
Work, logistics and getting around
Brampton's economy runs on movement. The city is home to the Brampton Intermodal Terminal, described as the largest intermodal railway terminal in Canada, and it sits beside Toronto Pearson, the country's busiest airport. Highways 410 and 407 cross the city, Highway 401 runs just south in Mississauga, and the network puts some 158 million consumers within a day's drive. More than 8,600 businesses operate in the city, including the head office of Loblaw, Canada's largest food retailer, along with Coca-Cola bottling operations and Medtronic. The Chrysler assembly plant in Bramalea, now part of Stellantis, has been a major employer, and Amazon runs large fulfilment centres here.
Brampton Transit runs the local bus network and the Züm bus rapid transit routes along Queen, Steeles, Main and Bovaird. Three GO Transit stations on the Kitchener line, Bramalea, Brampton and Mount Pleasant, connect the city to downtown Toronto's Union Station, and VIA Rail trains also stop at Brampton station. Highway 410 is the main north to south freeway through the city, while Pearson Airport, in neighbouring Mississauga, handles nearly all air travel for Brampton residents.
Notable people
The poet Rupi Kaur, born in Punjab in 1992 and raised in Brampton, turned her Brampton upbringing into Milk and Honey, the 2014 collection that became a worldwide bestseller and helped define Instagram era poetry. The singer Shubh, born Shubhneet Singh Gill in India and raised in Brampton, became in 2025 the second Punjabi artist after Diljit Dosanjh to appear solo on a Billboard Canada cover. Singer Alessia Cara, actor Michael Cera and comedian Russell Peters also come from Brampton.
In public life, Gurbax Singh Malhi represented the Bramalea, Gore and Malton area in Parliament for 18 years as Canada's first turban wearing Sikh MP. Ruby Dhalla, elected in 2004, was among the first Sikh women in the House of Commons, and Jagmeet Singh began his career here, winning the Bramalea, Gore and Malton provincial seat in 2011 before leading the federal New Democratic Party.
Brampton today
Today Brampton is a young, fast growing city still being built at its edges. Education and health care are expanding with it: Sheridan College's Davis Campus trains students in the skilled trades, and in September 2025 Toronto Metropolitan University opened its School of Medicine in Brampton, the first new medical school in the Greater Toronto Area in more than a century, with an opening class of 94 students.
The city's two identities now sit comfortably together. The Flower City name survives in the Rose Theatre, in garden plantings and in the Communities in Bloom program, while Punjabi is heard in its council chambers, classrooms and hockey arenas. For the Punjabi diaspora in Canada, Brampton is the reference point, a place where a newcomer can land at Pearson and find a gurdwara, a sweet shop and a family network within a short drive.
