Jiwanwal is a village in Gurdaspur tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Gurdaspur, about 3 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Gurdaspur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028258, and it covers 151 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,390 people in Jiwanwal: 747 men and 643 women, living in 271 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 151 hectares, the population density works out to about 921 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 861 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 167, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 700 people, about 50 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 75.31 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 79.12 per cent and women at 70.9 per cent. The census recorded 468 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 457 main workers, the largest group, 260, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 145 cultivators on their own land and 28 agricultural labourers. A further 11 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (66 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (63 hectares). About 22 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
