Where is Sharfkot?

Sharfkot is a village in Dera Baba Nanak tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Ramdas, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Fatehgarh Churian community development block and is served by the Shaifkot gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028955, and it covers 169 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 953 people in Sharfkot: 522 men and 431 women, living in 174 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 169 hectares, the population density works out to about 564 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 826 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 112, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 271 people, about 28 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.41 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.62 per cent and women at 62.79 per cent. The census recorded 304 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 296 main workers, the largest group, 116, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 100 cultivators on their own land and 79 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 8 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Sharfkot's land. Of the village's 169 hectares, 152 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (152 hectares). About 17 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 101 cultivators and 118 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
