Hamilton, Kirikiriroa in Māori, is New Zealand's fourth most populous city, an inland city on the banks of the Waikato River with 174,741 people in the 2023 census. For Punjabis it holds a place no other New Zealand city can claim: the New Zealand Sikh Society was founded here in 1964, the country's first Sikh temple was built here in 1977, and the Waikato farmland around it is where Punjabi dairy farming in New Zealand began.

Where is Hamilton, and why do Punjabis live there?

Hamilton stands on both banks of the Waikato River, New Zealand's longest river, in the heart of the Waikato region of the North Island, south of Auckland. The city began as a group of Māori villages, including Kirikiriroa, the long stretch of gravel that gives the city its Māori name. After the Invasion of Waikato and the land confiscations of the 1860s, the 4th Waikato Regiment settled the site in August 1864, and the town that grew up served the farms of the Waikato plains. Hamilton was proclaimed a city in 1945 and is now the region's seat, one of the fastest growing cities in the country, and a centre for education and agricultural research, home to the University of Waikato, the Wintec institute and some 40,000 tertiary students.

Punjabis live in and around Hamilton because the Waikato offered what farming families from Punjab understood best: dairy land. From the late 1930s many Punjabi Sikhs settled in the Waikato and took up dairy farming, building on the scrub clearing and farm work of the pioneer generation, and the city became the community's service centre, with its temple, shops and schools. Hamilton follows Auckland in this series' map of Punjabi places in New Zealand, and in community history it comes first: this is where organised Sikh life in New Zealand started.

What do the numbers say?

Hamilton City counted 174,741 people in the 2023 census, up 8.6 per cent since 2018, with a median age of 33.2, well below the national 38.1 because of its large student population. It is a diverse city: 30.1 per cent of residents were born overseas, and people of Asian ethnicities made up 22.8 per cent of the city, alongside 58.5 per cent European and 25.4 per cent Māori. Panjabi was spoken by 3,729 people in the city, 2.1 per cent of Hamiltonians, and the Indian ethnic group numbered 17,283 people, 9.9 per cent of the city.

For religion, the Stats NZ place summary for Hamilton City does not list Sikhism separately, folding it into an other religions, beliefs and philosophies group of 3.2 per cent, so no exact Hamilton City Sikh total is stated here. At regional level the census counted 6,795 Sikhs in the Waikato region in 2023, 1.36 per cent of the region, up from 4,074 in 2018 and 1,875 in 2013. Nationally, Sikhs numbered 53,406 in 2023, 1.07 per cent of New Zealand, the country's fastest growing religious group.

Dairy country: the Waikato Punjabi story

The first identifiable Sikhs in New Zealand were two brothers from the Moga district of Punjab, Phuman Singh and Bir Singh Gill, who arrived around 1890, and the small wave that followed between 1890 and 1910 settled mostly in the Waikato, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. In the Waikato the pioneers cleared scrub and tea tree to make farmland, and Punjabi families became known as dairy farming pioneers: by the 1950s and 1960s several Punjabis had established successful dairy farms across the greater Waikato, and their descendants farm there still. Hamilton, as the Waikato's city, drew the institutions that farming families needed, and it is no accident that when the community organised nationally, it organised here. The pattern repeats today on a larger scale: farm work, contracting, transport, study at the university and Wintec, and family settlement across the city's newer northern suburbs such as Rototuna and Flagstaff, in a city whose main growth area is the Flagstaff and Rototuna side.

Gurdwaras and the New Zealand Sikh Society

The New Zealand Sikh Society was established in 1964, and its own history records that the first Sikh temple in New Zealand was built in Hamilton in 1977, at Te Rapa on the city's northern side, with the society's Auckland branch and the Ōtāhuhu temple following in 1986. The society's Hamilton temple still stands on Te Rapa Road at Horotiu, just north of the city. Te Rapa also holds the Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur on Bryant Road, a second Hamilton temple serving the northern suburbs. Between them, the Te Rapa temples anchor a community that reaches well beyond the city into the Waikato's farm districts, in the same way the first temple served scattered farming families who drove in from across the region.

Hamilton is the Waikato's river city, New Zealand's dairy heartland capital and, for Sikhs, the community's first home in this country: the first society, the first temple, and a farming story that runs from the pioneer scrub clearers to today's students and farm owners.
