Where is Dhal?

Dhal is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mukerian community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031235, and it covers 86 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 476 people in Dhal: 241 men and 235 women, living in 78 households, an average of about 6.1 people per household. Spread over its 86 hectares, the population density works out to about 553 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 975 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 64, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 216 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 77.18 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.77 per cent and women at 73.53 per cent. The census recorded 122 workers, about 26 per cent of the village. Of the 119 main workers, the largest group, 74, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 37 cultivators on their own land and 8 agricultural labourers.
