Where is Kalanaur Tehsil?

Kalanaur Tehsil is a tehsil in the west of Gurdaspur district in the Majha region of Punjab, India, headquartered in the historic settlement of Kalanaur on the Kiran rivulet near the Ravi river. It is known across India as the place where the young Akbar was crowned Mughal emperor in 1556.

Gurdaspur district sits in the north of Punjab between two rivers: the Ravi to the west, which forms the border with Pakistan, and the Beas to the east, below the Himalayan foothills in the Jalandhar division. Kalanaur holds the western side of the district, toward the Ravi plain. Its headquarters settlement stands about 25 kilometres west of Gurdaspur city, the district headquarters, at an average elevation of 243 metres, on National Highway 354. Dera Baba Nanak tehsil lies to its west and Gurdaspur tehsil to its east, in a border countryside of villages, canals and riverain fields.

Kalanaur is a young tehsil in administrative terms. At the Census of 2011 it was still a sub tehsil inside Gurdaspur tehsil, which is why that census published no separate population total for it. A Punjab Government notification dated 14 December 2016 then formed the new sub division of Kalanaur, with its headquarters at Kalanaur, naming 116 villages in its territory. District listings today name Kalanaur among the five tehsils of Gurdaspur, alongside Batala, Dera Baba Nanak, Dinanagar and Gurdaspur, and rural development in its villages runs through the Kalanaur development block, one of the eleven blocks of the district. The Jugti tehsil directory currently lists 104 village pages under Kalanaur, counted in October 2026, against the 116 villages named in the 2016 notification.

The headquarters settlement of Kalanaur

Kalanaur itself was counted at the Census of 2011 as a village of Gurdaspur tehsil, and a remarkable one: with 13,642 people in 2,540 households spread over 2,694 hectares, the district village directory records it as the largest village in Gurdaspur district by population. The settlement is divided among six gram panchayats, each headed by an elected sarpanch. Its literacy rate of 83.97 percent, with male literacy at 87.35 percent and female literacy at 80.28 percent, stood well above the Punjab average of 75.84 percent recorded in the same census. Its sex ratio was 906 women per 1,000 men, children under six numbered 1,468, and 1,557 residents belonged to the Scheduled Castes.

For the villages around it, Kalanaur is the first town of daily life: the tehsil and block offices, the bazaar, a market committee that collects the harvest, and schools that draw children from across the tehsil. The recorded institutions include a government senior secondary school, a DAV high school and a government industrial training institute, among others. Its post office carries the PIN code 143512. Older accounts remember a much grander place, a centre of art, trade and cottage industry, and preserve the saying that a person who has not seen Lahore should see Kalanaur.

Where Akbar was crowned: Kalanaur in history

The town is old, and its beginnings are told in more than one way. The Imperial Gazetteer recorded a tradition that two Muslim brothers named Kala and Noor founded it, the historian Mohammad Latif credited the Noor tribe of Rajputs, and a third account derives the name from the Kaleshwar temple of Shiva standing within a local fort. Local tradition also remembers a principality of the Jarral Rajputs at Kalanaur, said to have lasted some 350 years before the town was taken in the twelfth century after a battle with the Jarral rajas.

From the fourteenth to the sixteenth century Kalanaur was a major urban centre of this region. Firuz Shah Tughluq, who reigned from 1352 to 1388, built a palace on the bank of the Kiran during a hunting visit, and in the reign of Sayyid Mubarak Shah, from 1421 to 1435, the town was held by the Khokhar tribe under Raja Jasrat. Armies and courts passed this way because the town stood high, on a mound above the riverain plain, close to the road between Lahore and the hills.

Its most famous day came in February 1556. The Mughal emperor Humayun had died in Delhi in January that year, in a fall on the stairs of his library, and his son Akbar was in Punjab with his guardian Bairam Khan, campaigning against Afghan opponents. On 14 February 1556, at about thirteen years and three months of age, Akbar was crowned emperor at Kalanaur, on a masonry platform raised in a garden near the town. That platform, the Takht-i-Akbari, stands about two kilometres east of the town and can still be visited: it is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and has been declared a monument of national importance. A mosque built during Akbar's reign also survives in the town.

Later centuries layered more faiths and powers onto the same ground. Sikh tradition remembers that Banda Singh Bahadur had a well dug at Kalanaur, where the Gurdwara Banda Bahadur now stands. In the eighteenth century the Kanhaiya Misl under Sardar Haqeeqat Singh occupied the town, and his son Jaimal Singh extended his territory to Fatehgarh Churian; Jaimal Singh's daughter Chand Kaur married Kharak Singh, the heir of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, in 1812. The area then passed into Ranjit Singh's kingdom, was granted in turn to Kharak Singh and to Raja Dina Nath, and was finally annexed into British India after Dina Nath's death in 1857.

Land, water and farming

The tehsil's water story is the Kiran, a minor rivulet that rises in the Chhamb of Behrampur, winds in a serpentine course past Kalanaur town and finally merges into the Ravi. West of the tehsil the Ravi itself marks the international border, and the low plain between the Kiran and the Ravi is classic Majha riverain land: flat, alluvial and closely farmed, with villages set in their own fields and fodder grown alongside the grain.

Farming is the economy here, as across Gurdaspur district. A Punjab Agricultural University study of district farm households in 2019 to 2020 found wheat the largest crop, at 38.23 percent of the cropped area in its sample, followed by paddy, with ordinary paddy at 21.95 percent and basmati at 16.46 percent, and sugarcane at 13.79 percent. Average operational holdings in that study were around eight acres, crop cultivation supplied 61.65 percent of farm household income, and livestock added a further 15.53 percent, the dairy side of the same wheat, paddy and fodder rotation. Kalanaur's own market committee, one of ten in the district, collects and trades the harvest of its villages.

People and faith

Punjabi is the language of the tehsil, in its Majha form, and village life runs through gram panchayats, schools and places of worship. Because Kalanaur was part of Gurdaspur tehsil in 2011, the faith figures of that census belong to the parent tehsil frame: Gurdaspur tehsil then counted Sikhs at 46.37 percent, Hindus at 40.08 percent, Christians at 11.9 percent and Muslims at 0.82 percent, a Christian share that is among the most notable features of this border countryside. No separate religion table for Kalanaur tehsil exists from that census, and none should be invented for it.

The headquarters settlement itself holds the landmarks of three traditions within a short walk: the Gurdwara Banda Bahadur on the site of Banda Singh Bahadur's well, the old Shiva temple linked in local accounts with the town's very name, and the mosque built in Akbar's reign near the memory of his coronation. Together with the Takht-i-Akbari platform in the fields, they make this small tehsil headquarters an unusually layered place, where a Mughal coronation, a Sikh warrior's well and an ancient Shiva shrine all belong to the same local story.

Getting to Kalanaur Tehsil

Kalanaur town stands on National Highway 354, about 25 kilometres west of Gurdaspur city; the road distance is put at about 26 kilometres, and buses are the everyday public transport of the tehsil, with public and private bus services recorded in the headquarters settlement itself. Westward, the road continues to Dera Baba Nanak on the Ravi, the nearest town named for Kalanaur in the census village records, whose railway station is the nearest station recorded for the settlement. Rail travellers also use Gurdaspur city, which stands on the Amritsar to Pathankot line 71 kilometres from Amritsar, and Amritsar's international airport is the usual gateway for visitors and for the diaspora families of this border countryside.
