Where is Khalu?

Khalu is a village of Kapurthala tehsil in Kapurthala district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kapurthala, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kapurthala community development block and is served by the Khaku gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029354, and it covers 300 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,184 people in Khalu: 621 men and 563 women, living in 229 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 300 hectares, the population density works out to about 395 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 907 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 176, about 15 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 117 people, about 10 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.39 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.55 per cent and women at 58.79 per cent. The census recorded 418 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 255 main workers, the largest group, 145, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 78 other workers in trade, transport and services and 32 agricultural labourers. A further 163 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Khalu's land. Of the village's 300 hectares, 38 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (38 hectares). About 262 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 146 cultivators and 167 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
