Where is Makha?

Makha is a village of Mansa tehsil in Mansa district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mansa, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Jhunir community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036107, and it covers 1,186 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,261 people in Makha: 1,741 men and 1,520 women, living in 613 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 1,186 hectares, the population density works out to about 275 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 873 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 307, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 731 people, about 22 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

A further 771 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Makha's land. Of the village's 1,186 hectares, 1,086 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 1,084 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (972 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (112 hectares). About 100 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 669 cultivators and 1,013 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
