Where is Tamkot?

Tamkot is a village in Mansa tehsil of Mansa district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mansa, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mansa community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036130, and it covers 906 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,916 people in Tamkot: 1,526 men and 1,390 women, living in 579 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 906 hectares, the population density works out to about 322 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 911 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 302, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 906 people, about 31 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 61.51 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 68.66 per cent and women at 53.82 per cent. The census recorded 1,530 workers, about 52 per cent of the village. Of the 867 main workers, the largest group, 498, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 241 agricultural labourers and 119 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 663 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (703 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (85 hectares). About 89 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 9 hours a day. With 896 cultivators and 481 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Treated tap water was available in the village. It also had mobile phone coverage and an internet common service centre. Banking was available in the village itself, with a cooperative bank branch. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 18 hours a day.
