Dhurkot Kalan is a village in Moga tehsil of Moga district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Moga, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Moga-I community development block and is served by the Dhurkot Tahli gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034011, and it covers 448 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,531 people in Dhurkot Kalan: 799 men and 732 women, living in 307 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 448 hectares, the population density works out to about 342 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 916 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 164, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 748 people, about 49 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 70.96 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 75.77 per cent and women at 65.75 per cent. The census recorded 485 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 398 main workers, the largest group, 200, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 134 cultivators on their own land and 59 agricultural labourers. A further 87 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Dhurkot Kalan's land. Of the village's 448 hectares, 412 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (76 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (336 hectares). About 36 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. It also had a PDS ration shop and mobile phone coverage. It had no bank branch or ATM in the 2011 record; the nearest bank was within five kilometres. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 12 hours a day.

The directory recorded Moga, about 10 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Moga, the tehsil headquarters, and Moga city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel.
