Where is Bakhtra?

Bakhtra is a village of Bhawanigarh tehsil in Sangrur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Bhawani Garh, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhawanigarh community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039680, and it covers 266 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,208 people in Bakhtra: 643 men and 565 women, living in 211 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 266 hectares, the population density works out to about 454 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 879 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 170, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 400 people, about 33 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.47 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.66 per cent and women at 67.68 per cent. The census recorded 396 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 351 main workers, the largest group, 138, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 133 agricultural labourers and 80 cultivators on their own land. A further 45 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Bakhtra's land. Of the village's 266 hectares, 246 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (28 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (218 hectares). About 20 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 82 cultivators and 151 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Bhawanigarh, the tehsil headquarters, and Sangrur, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Bakhopir, Panwan, Bakhtri and Majha.
