Where is Mahuana?

Mahuana is a village of Malout tehsil in Sri Muktsar Sahib district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Malout, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Lambi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035287, and it covers 658 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,360 people in Mahuana: 1,231 men and 1,129 women, living in 461 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 658 hectares, the population density works out to about 359 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 917 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 220, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 869 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.26 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.48 per cent and women at 57.42 per cent. The census recorded 873 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 605 main workers, the largest group, 309, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 188 agricultural labourers and 102 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 268 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Mahuana's land. Of the village's 658 hectares, 582 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (582 hectares). About 41 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 318 cultivators and 396 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
