What does dasvandh mean in Punjabi? Dasvandh (ਦਸਵੰਧ) literally means a tenth part. In Sikh life it is the practice of setting aside one tenth of what you earn and giving it in the Guru's name for the shared needs of the community, from the langar kitchen to help for people in need.

What does dasvandh mean in Punjabi?

The Encyclopedia of Sikhism defines dasvandh as contributing one tenth of your earnings towards the common resources of the community, and calls it a religious obligation and a form of seva. The tenth is not a fee and it is not paid to a person. It goes into the common pool, historically called Guru ki Golak, and is spent on the community's religious and welfare work.

Where does the idea of dasvandh come from?

Its root is a line of Guru Nanak in the Guru Granth Sahib (page 1245): the one who earns honestly and shares part of it with others knows the true way. Under Guru Amar Das a formal system took shape, with 22 manjis passing sangats' offerings to the Guru. As the Amritsar pool and Harimandar were built under Guru Ram Das, Sikhs were asked to set apart a minimum of ten per cent for the common pool. Later rahitnamas, including Bhai Nand Lal's Tankhahnama, wrote the duty down as a rule of Sikh conduct.

How is dasvandh given today?

Today families commonly set the tenth aside from a salary, a harvest or a business income, and give it for langar, a gurdwara building or repair, education, medical help or relief work. Some give money, some give grain and goods in kind, as farming families have always done. What matters in the teaching is the habit: honest earning first, then a fixed share kept for others before the rest is spent at home.

Is dasvandh the same as charity?

No. The Encyclopedia of Sikhism makes the distinction clear: dasvandh is not the same as dan, ordinary charity to a needy person. Charity answers one person's need in the moment. Dasvandh attends to the needs of the whole community on an ongoing basis, maintaining gurdwaras, Guru ka Langar and projects of social welfare and uplift. It sits beside its sister teachings: kirat karo, earn honestly, and vand chhakna, share what you have.
