What does vatna mean in Punjabi? Vatna (ਵਟਣਾ) is the paste of turmeric powder and mustard oil, often mixed with flour, that female relatives and friends rub on a bride or a groom before the wedding. The word also names the rite itself, in which the paste is applied as part of the mayian preparations.
What is vatna made of?
The base is always turmeric and mustard oil. The Punjabi wedding traditions account describes vatna, also called ubtan, as a mixture of turmeric, gram flour, rose water and other beneficial skincare ingredients, supposed to bring a glow to the bride’s and groom’s bodies, especially on their faces. A detailed mayian guide gives the same Punjabi recipe in practical form: turmeric powder as the primary ingredient, mustard oil to bind the paste, gram flour for a thicker, scrubbing texture, with sandalwood powder, rose water or milk cream added in some families. Each family keeps its own recipe.
How is vatna applied?
Vatna is applied at the couple’s own homes, separately for bride and groom. In the mayian account, the bride or groom sits on a wooden plank called a patri, a red cloth is held above by four female relatives, and married women of the household, led by the mother, rub the paste on the face, arms and legs while traditional songs are sung. In the haldi or vatna account, four lamps or diyas are lit and the bride sits facing them while oil is poured into the lamps so their glow reflects on her face. The bride stays at home in old clothes for a couple of days before the wedding, and after this ritual the bride and groom do not meet each other until the wedding ceremony.
Is vatna the same as haldi?
In everyday speech the two names overlap, and vatna is often called the haldi ceremony. The Punjabi word is more specific. Haldi names turmeric ceremonies across India, while vatna is the Punjabi paste and rite inside mayian, with mustard oil and gram flour giving it a scrubbing, ubtan-like quality. Vatna is also known as Shaint in some cultures, and the same paste is called ubtan in the wider South Asian tradition.
