Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said on Thursday that police have registered 68,545 drug cases and arrested nearly 90,000 accused since 31 March 2025 under the state's Yudh Nashean Virudh campaign. The figures came as the opposition presses the Bhagwant Mann government on drugs and as a report says the Enforcement Directorate is weighing its own probe.

Cheema said the state has also seized about 450 kg of heroin, more than Rs 23 crore in drug money, over 67 lakh intoxicant capsules, around 4,200 injections and 84 kg of narcotic powder. He added that anti-drone systems have been installed along the border. News18 noted that the figures were cited by the minister and have not been independently verified.

What did he claim about drug use in other states?

Cheema cited a newspaper report to claim drug use fell 5.5% in Punjab while rising in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. He said the data came from the Government of India, not the Punjab government. The underlying report and its method were not provided. He also attacked the BJP over Gujarat, an allegation that is political and unproven here, and referred to reported remarks by Bihar's police chief praising Punjab's efforts.

The Union home ministry has also sought a report from the state government. The report says a decision on a formal probe is still pending.

ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਅਗਲੇ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ। ਕਈ ਸ਼ੱਕੀ ਨਸ਼ਾ-ਮੌਤ ਮਾਮਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਸਕਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਜਪਾ ਨੇ ਜਿੱਤਣ 'ਤੇ ਦਸੰਬਰ 2029 ਤੱਕ ਨਸ਼ਾ-ਮੁਕਤ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦਾ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਧਿਰ ਸੂਬੇ ਨੂੰ ਬਦਨਾਮ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
