About the book
Birha Tu Sultan — 'Separation, You Are the King' — is a 1964 poetry collection by Shiv Kumar Batalvi (1936–1973), the Punjabi poet often called the Keats of Punjab for the intensity of his feeling and the brevity of his life. It appeared between Dardmandan Diyan Aahin (1964) and Loona (1965), the verse play that would win him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967 and make him its youngest-ever recipient.
The collection belongs to Batalvi's great middle period, when he had moved past the early books — Piran da Paraga (1960), Lajwanti (1961), Aate Diyan Chiriyaan (1962), Mainu Vida Karo (1963) — and was writing the love poetry that would make him immortal. The title poem, 'Birha Tu Sultan', is one of his most anthologised pieces.
Plot & themes
Birha — separation, longing, the ache of the absent beloved — is Batalvi's great subject, and this collection is its coronation. The title poem addresses separation not as a wound but as a sovereign: birha as sultan, ruling over the lover's inner life with absolute authority. It is a startling reversal of the usual lament — instead of begging for relief, the poet bows to the pain and grants it kingship.
Around it stand the poems of Batalvi's familiar world: the village and the fields of his Batala childhood, the beloved who is always leaving or already gone, the mother, the friends, the nights that will not end. His diction mixes the folk idiom of Punjabi geet with a highly wrought, almost Persianate lyricism; his images — the shikra hawk, the dark night, the unlit lamp — have entered the common language of Punjabi feeling.
What distinguishes the collection is its sustained pitch. Batalvi does not argue or narrate; he sustains a single emotional note — longing — across dozens of poems without it thinning. Readers who know only 'Main ik shikra yaar banaya' will find here the same voice at full stretch.
The author
Shiv Kumar Batalvi (1936–1973) was born in Barapind, Shakargarh tehsil (now Pakistan), and grew up in Batala. He became the defining Punjabi poet of the 1960s, writing of love, separation and death with an intensity that made him a folk hero in his lifetime. His verse play Loona (1965), based on the legend of Puran Bhagat, won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967. He died in 1973 at thirty-six. His work has been set to music by generations of singers, from Jagjit Singh to contemporary artists, and his auditorium in Batala and the annual Shiv Kumar Batalvi Award keep his name alive.
Reception & legacy
Birha Tu Sultan consolidated Batalvi's reputation as the poet of birha — the inheritor, in modern form, of the Sufi and qissa tradition's great theme. The collection is constantly reprinted in his Samuchi Kavita (complete works) and quoted wherever Punjabi love poetry is discussed. Its title phrase has become proverbial: to call separation a sultan is now a recognisably Batalvian gesture, imitated by poets who came after him.
Read it if...
you know Batalvi only from Loona or the famous geet and want the lyric core of his work; you are interested in how the classical theme of birha was remade for the 20th century; or you want to understand why, half a century after his death, Punjab still quotes him like a contemporary.
