About the book

Mirza Sahiban is one of the four great tragic romances of the Punjab, alongside Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal and Sassi Punnun. The story was first recorded in literary form by Pilu — usually spelled Peelu — a Punjabi poet of the 17th century whose rendering is still considered the finest. It is composed in the qissa tradition, the long narrative poem in which Punjabi poets have told their love stories for centuries.

Peelu (c. 1580–1675) is a shadowy figure in literary history. Sikh tradition records that he visited Guru Arjan in Amritsar when the Guru was compiling the Adi Granth, asking that his compositions be included; the Guru declined. His poetry, written in the dialect of the Thal region, describes the political, social and economic life of Punjab in the age of Akbar. His disciple, Hafiz Barkhudar, later retold the same story, and many versions followed — but Peelu's Mirza Sahiban remains the touchstone.

Plot & themes

Mirza, son of Wanjhal, a Kharal chief of Danabad, and Sahiban, daughter of Khiva Khan of the Sials of Khewa, are childhood companions who fall in love. Sahiban is married off against her will to Tahar Khan. On the day of the wedding she sends Mirza a message through a Brahmin named Karmu: come and decorate my hands with henna. Mirza rides to rescue her despite his family's warnings — his own sister begs him not to leave on her wedding day, and everyone knows the Sials are dangerous men.

The two elope together and stop to rest under a jand tree, where Mirza falls asleep. Sahiban, unwilling to begin her new life with her brothers' blood on it, breaks all of Mirza's arrows, meaning to beg her brothers for acceptance instead. When they arrive, Mirza wakes, finds his arrows broken, and is killed before he can defend himself. Sahiban, unable to bear the loss, ends her own life.

Of the four great romances, Mirza Sahiban is the one where the lovers are closest to succeeding. The tragedy does not come from fate or an outside villain but from Sahiban's own moral choice — her compassion becomes the instrument of destruction. Peelu's telling makes her neither a betrayer nor a saint, which is why the story has been retold, sung and argued over for four hundred years. It is also the only one of the four romances in which the hero's martial prowess — Mirza is an archer of legendary skill — is so completely set against a woman's refusal of violence.

The author

Peelu is regarded as the first major qissa poet of Punjabi. Little is known about his life beyond what literary tradition preserves: that he was a Muslim Jat, that he lived through the reigns of Akbar into Aurangzeb's time, and that his Mirza Sahiban outshone all rivals. His work established the model for the Punjabi qissa — a heroic love story set in a recognisably real Punjab of clans, villages and honour codes — that Waris Shah would bring to its peak a century later with Heer.

Reception & legacy

Mirza Sahiban has lived far beyond the printed page. It is sung by mirasis, performed in village qissakhwani gatherings, and has been adapted for stage and film many times. In the late 19th century, woodblock prints of the climax scene — Mirza asleep under the jand tree — were sold in Amritsar and Lahore, proof of how deeply the story sat in popular imagination. Modern Punjabi singers, including Harbhajan Mann, have recorded versions of Peelu's tale. A 2022 theatre production in Canada, Dooja Ghar, built an entire play around retelling Mirza-Sahiban through a diaspora lens.

Critics note that the romance differs from Heer Ranjha in its moral centre: Waris Shah's Heer is destroyed by a social order she cannot escape; Peelu's Sahiban makes a choice, and the choice destroys them both. That ambiguity — is Sahiban's breaking of the arrows loyalty, cowardice, or wisdom — keeps the qissa alive as a story people argue about rather than merely admire.

Read it if...

you have read Heer Ranjha and want the other great tragic romance of Punjab; you are interested in the qissa form and its 17th-century origins; or you want to see how a story told four hundred years ago still raises a question no one can settle — whether Sahiban saved her family or doomed her lover.
