About the book
Rete Di Ik Mutthi — 'A Fistful of Sand' — is a novel by Gurdial Singh, the Jnanpith-winning novelist (1999) who made the Malwa region of Punjab the moral landscape of modern Punjabi fiction. Like Marhi Da Diva (1964), Anhoye (1966), Adh Chanani Raat (1972) and Anhe Ghore Da Daan (1976), it is set amid the shifting contours of rural Malwa, which in Gurdial Singh's fiction becomes a microcosm of the world — a place where the larger drama of human existence plays itself out in village lanes and fields.
The title is the argument: sand clutched in a fist slips through the fingers. What a man grasps at with both hands — wealth, status, acquisition — is exactly what he cannot hold, and the grasping costs him what he could have kept.
Plot & themes
The novel portrays a rural household and village caught in the dialectic of tradition and modernity that runs through all of Gurdial Singh's fiction: the old codes of kinship, honour and mutual obligation giving way before the new logic of money. Its central movement is the slow erosion of human values — love, fidelity, trust — under the blind pursuit of materialism. Nothing collapses all at once; that is the point. Values drain away grain by grain, like sand from a fist.
Gurdial Singh's method here is the one his critics describe across his work: characters who are individualised yet typical, concretisations of the social context they live in, rendered with an unsparing sense of verisimilitude. He never lets sympathy for a character overwhelm his commitment to the social concern. The trauma of change is chronicled village-style — in disputes over land and inheritance, in marriages strained by dowry and debt, in the small daily choices by which people trade belonging for advantage.
Read beside Marhi Da Diva, which relocates questions of ownership and dispossession within the Green Revolution, Rete Di Ik Mutthi completes a picture: the first novel asks who owns the land, this one asks what the owning does to the owner.
The author
Gurdial Singh (1933–2016) is among the most honoured writers in Punjabi. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award (1975), the Soviet Land Nehru Award (1986), the Bhai Vir Singh Fiction Award (1992) and the Jnanpith (1999), India's highest literary honour. A retired teacher from Jaito, he shunned publicity all his life. His fiction — rooted in Malwa's local colours, sounds and smells — treats man as essentially a social and historical being, and his novels function, as one critic put it, the way poetic metaphors do.
Reception & legacy
Rete Di Ik Mutthi is read as one of Gurdial Singh's sustained meditations on what materialism costs the Punjabi village — companion to Anhe Ghore Da Daan's bemoaning of the lost kinship culture and Anhoye's record of dehumanisation creeping in with early industrialisation. In the arc of his work it belongs to the 'narratives of oppression' phase that precedes the emancipatory vision of his late masterpiece Parsa (1991). For students of Punjabi fiction it is a key text on the novelist's central theme: tradition and modernity not as abstractions but as forces that meet in a single household.
Read it if...
you have read Marhi Da Diva or Anhe Ghore Da Daan and want the full Gurdial Singh shelf; you are interested in fiction about what money does to village life; or you like novels where the title tells you the ending and the pleasure is in watching it arrive, grain by grain.
