Manmohan Singh (26 September 1932 to 26 December 2024) was an Indian economist and politician, and the prime minister of India from 2004 to 2014. Born in the village of Gah in what is now Pakistani Punjab, he studied in Amritsar and taught at Panjab University before becoming the architect of India's 1991 economic reforms. He was the first Sikh to hold the country's top post.

Early life

Manmohan Singh was born on 26 September 1932 in Gah, a village now in Chakwal district of Pakistan's Punjab, within the union council of Begal. According to Wikipedia he was born to Gurmukh Singh Kohli and Amrit Kaur in a Punjabi Sikh Khatri family. His mother died when he was very young, and his paternal grandmother Jamna Devi raised him.

He first studied Urdu and Punjabi at a local gurdwara and entered the village primary school on 17 April 1937, where he studied up to Class 4, The Hindu reports. The school register gives his birth date as 4 February 1932, while the obituaries give 26 September.

Partition and Punjab studies

The family left Gah around Partition in 1947 and settled in Amritsar, according to the Guardian and India Today. India Today says he studied at Hindu College, Amritsar, from 1951 to 1954, where classmates remembered his skill in mathematics. Wikipedia says he took his bachelor's degree in 1952 and master's in 1954 at Panjab University, which was then temporarily based in Hoshiarpur, and that he stood first throughout.

A university scholarship took him to St John's College, Cambridge, where the Guardian says he earned a first in economics. Wikipedia adds that he completed the Economics Tripos in 1957. He later took a doctorate at Nuffield College, Oxford, with a 1962 thesis on India's export performance.

Teacher, civil servant and finance minister

Singh taught economics at Panjab University from 1957 to 1965, rising from lecturer to professor, according to Wikipedia. India Today says he built a house in Sector 11, Chandigarh. He worked at the UN trade body UNCTAD from 1966 to 1969, was chief economic adviser from 1972, and served as governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985.

In 1991 Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao made him finance minister during a balance of payments crisis. The BBC says the reforms cut taxes, devalued the rupee and encouraged foreign investment, and Wikipedia says they dismantled the licence raj. He sat in the Rajya Sabha from 1991, first for Assam and from 2019 for Rajasthan.

Prime minister

After the 2004 election Sonia Gandhi named him as the Congress-led alliance's choice, and he took office on 22 May 2004. His governments passed the rural employment guarantee and Right to Information laws in 2005 and signed the India-US civil nuclear agreement in 2008. He won a second term in 2009, and left office in May 2014.

In 2005 he apologised in Parliament for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. His second term was marked by the 2G spectrum and Commonwealth Games scandals, and critics such as L. K. Advani called him weak, the BBC reports.

Family and death

He married Gursharan Kaur in 1958, and they had three daughters, Upinder, Daman and Amrit. He collapsed at his Delhi home on 26 December 2024 and died hours later at AIIMS, aged 92. A state funeral followed at Nigam Bodh Ghat on 28 December.

Legacy in Punjab

The president of the Hindu College alumni association credits him with the city's modern airport and the Attari integrated check post. Panjab University was planning to name its economics department after him, India Today reports.
