Where is Attari?

Attari is a village in Amritsar II tehsil of Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region, about 3 kilometres on the Indian side of the Attari to Wagah border crossing with Pakistan. It is a sub-tehsil and block headquarters with its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037654, covers 1,032 hectares and has PIN code 143108. The 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 21 kilometres away, as its nearest town. Villages recorded around it include Roranwala, Rangarh, Hardo Rattan and Jhanjarpur.

Founded on a mound: how Attari got its name

The village was founded around 1740 by two Sidhu Jat brothers, Gaur Singh and Kaur Singh, sons of Chaudhri Kahn Chand of Kaonke in Ludhiana. A local ascetic, Mool Dass, pointed them to a large mound, a theh, and told them to settle there. On the mound Gaura built an attari, a three-storeyed house, and the village that grew around it took the name Attari from that house. The brothers travelled to Amritsar and took Khande di Pahul at the Akal Bunga, the seat now known as the Akal Takht, and joined the Bhangi Misl. From 1849 to 1855 the village lay in Lahore district, before passing to Amritsar district, where it has remained. The Amritsar to Lahore railway, completed in 1865, was laid past the north of the village.

Sham Singh Attariwala, the general from this village

Attari's most famous son was born here in the 1790s: Sardar Sham Singh Attariwala, son of Sardar Nihal Singh. He joined the Sikh Khalsa Army in 1817 and Maharaja Ranjit Singh raised him to jathedar of 5,000 horsemen. He campaigned through the Afghan to Sikh wars, at Attock, Multan and Peshawar, and on the Kashmir expedition of 1819, and later sat on the Council of Regency in the empire's last years. His name is made by his end. At the Battle of Sobraon on 10 February 1846, the decisive battle of the First Anglo-Sikh War, he led from the front in white and was killed as the Sikh position collapsed around him. His body was brought home and he was cremated outside the village on 12 February 1846, where a samadh was raised beside his family's samadhis. His descendants still live in Attari, and members of his family, Chattar Singh and his son Sher Singh Attariwala, led the Sikh rising of 1848 to 1849 against the British. His samadh in the village has been restored, with a museum beside it, and his martyrdom day is marked there every February with a religious diwan.

The border that carries the village's name

Three kilometres west of the village stands the only road crossing between India and Pakistan on the Punjab border, on the Grand Trunk Road, today's National Highway 1 and part of the Asian Highway AH1. Every evening since 1959 the Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers have closed it with the Beating Retreat ceremony: a drill of battle calls, high kicks and stomping that ends with the two flags lowered together and a handshake between the head guards. The ceremony was first set up on 11 October 1947 by Brigadier Mohinder Singh Chopra and Brigadier Nazir Ahmed, in the weeks of Partition, with a chalk line, drums and two sentry boxes; it has grown into a stadium spectacle watched by thousands. The two sides exchange sweets on Eid and Diwali; the ceremony is also one of the first things suspended when relations sour, as in May 2025, when it paused after the Pahalgam attack and resumed in a limited form without the handshakes. Visitors call the place the Wagah border, but Wagah is the village on the Pakistani side; the Indian half of the crossing, and the name on the Indian gate, is Attari.

Trade, trucks and the last station

Road trade through Attari grew from about Rs 6.5 billion in 2007 to Rs 15 billion in 2010 to 2011, and after the Integrated Check Post opened on 13 April 2012 around 500 trucks a day were crossing. Attari railway station is the last Indian station on the line between Delhi and Lahore: when the Samjhauta Express ran, it covered the final 3 kilometres from Attari to Wagah across the border. Between the check post, the station and the ceremony crowds, the border is the village's biggest employer in everything but name.

People and work

The 2011 census counted 8,921 people in Attari: 4,810 men and 4,111 women living in 1,670 households, about 5.3 people to a household. Spread over 1,032 hectares, the density works out to about 864 people per square kilometre, high for a farming village. The sex ratio was 855 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 1,140, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 4,654 people, about 52 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.95 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 75.16 per cent and women at 63.96 per cent. The census recorded 3,003 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 2,379 main workers, by far the largest group, 1,839 people, were other workers in trade, transport and services, against 278 cultivators and 181 agricultural labourers. In a village where services employ two of every three main workers, the census is describing a border economy: transport, trade, tourism and government work first, farming second.

Land and farming

Farming covers the eastern part of Attari's land. Of the village's 1,032 hectares, 691 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated, all of it from canals. About 199 hectares were under non-agricultural uses, the settlement, the roads and the border installations, and a further 126 hectares were culturable waste and 16 hectares barren. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day.

Schools, health and daily services

Education in the village runs through two government primary schools, one government middle school, one government secondary school and one government senior secondary school, so children can study in Attari up to Class 12, and the census directory listings add government and private pre-primary schools and private secondary schooling. Directory listings for the villages around name Attari itself as their nearest private degree, engineering and medical colleges, a sign of how far this border village's services reach.

Health facilities recorded inside the village in 2011 included a community health centre, a primary health centre, a dispensary and a veterinary hospital, a set few villages of this size can match. Attari has both a post office and a sub post office, an ATM, a commercial bank and a cooperative bank, a PDS ration shop, an anganwadi centre, an ASHA worker and an internet common service centre: 28 of the census directory's 32 facility fields were positive, the fullest record of any village in this batch. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 15 hours a day, and supply for all users at 20 hours.

Faith in Attari

The village's sacred centre is the samadh of Sham Singh Attariwala and his family, restored in recent years and kept by a trust, where the annual martyrdom-day diwan is held and where visitors to the border are now encouraged to stop. Day-to-day worship is served by the village's own gurdwara and temples, and the evening crowds at the border ceremony, 3 kilometres west, have made the village's name known on both sides of the line.

Getting there

Attari stands on the Grand Trunk Road west of Amritsar, and both public and private bus services run in the village itself. Its own railway station is the last stop in India on the Amritsar to Lahore line. Amritsar is about 21 kilometres east; the border gates are 3 kilometres west, as far as a traveller without a visa can go.

What is the population of Attari?

The population of Attari was 8,921 at the 2011 census, living in 1,670 households in Amritsar II tehsil of Amritsar district.

Why is Attari famous?

Attari is famous as India's border village with Pakistan: the Attari to Wagah crossing, the daily Beating Retreat ceremony, the Integrated Check Post and the last Indian railway station on the Lahore line all carry its name. It was also the home village of the Sikh general Sham Singh Attariwala.
