Where is Khera?

Khera is a village of Baba Bakala tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Jandiala, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tarsika community development block and is served by the Bala Chak Mashmula Khaira gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037767, and it covers 140 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 900 people in Khera: 455 men and 445 women, living in 185 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 140 hectares, the population density works out to about 643 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 978 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 95, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 34 people, about 4 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.77 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 82.96 per cent and women at 70.5 per cent. The census recorded 297 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 214 main workers, the largest group, 111, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 95 other workers in trade, transport and services and 7 agricultural labourers. A further 83 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Khera's land. Of the village's 140 hectares, 125 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (125 hectares). About 15 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 118 cultivators and 31 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
