Where is Shahzada?

Shahzada is a village of Amritsar I tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Majitha, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Majitha community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037460, and it covers 343 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,917 people in Shahzada: 1,010 men and 907 women, living in 390 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 343 hectares, the population density works out to about 559 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 898 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 228, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 656 people, about 34 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.31 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.23 per cent and women at 58.62 per cent. The census recorded 657 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 534 main workers, the largest group, 284, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 160 cultivators on their own land and 83 agricultural labourers. A further 123 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Shahzada's land. Of the village's 343 hectares, 299 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (236 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (63 hectares). About 44 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 163 cultivators and 85 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
