Where is Sohian Khurd?

Sohian Khurd is a village in Amritsar II tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Verka community development block and is served by the Sohian--Khurd gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037612, and it covers 359 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,960 people in Sohian Khurd: 1,577 men and 1,383 women, living in 528 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 359 hectares, the population density works out to about 825 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 877 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 341, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,821 people, about 62 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.5 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 65.9 per cent and women at 60.78 per cent. The census recorded 1,447 workers, about 49 per cent of the village. Of the 1,145 main workers, the largest group, 786, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 197 agricultural labourers and 97 cultivators on their own land.
