History at a glance
Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and Australia's most populous city, built around Sydney Harbour on the Tasman Sea coast, with 5,231,147 people in Greater Sydney in the 2021 census. Its Punjabi community is Sydney's western story: in the Blacktown region of the northwest, 20,761 people used Punjabi at home in 2021, the top language other than English there, and Greater Sydney counted 38,713 Sikhs, anchored by the gurdwaras at Glenwood, Revesby and Austral.
Where is Sydney, and why do Punjabis live there?
Sydney spreads around the largest natural harbour in the world, on a coastal plain between the Pacific Ocean and the Blue Mountains. The area is the traditional land of Aboriginal peoples including the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, and the Opera House stands at Tubowgule, known today as Bennelong Point. Sydney began as a British penal colony: the First Fleet arrived at Sydney Cove in January 1788, and the settlement that followed grew into a port, then a gold rush city, then Australia's financial and media centre. The Harbour Bridge, opened in 1932 and nicknamed the Coathanger, and the Opera House, opened in 1973 to a design by Jorn Utzon and made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, are its two world known landmarks.
Punjabis live in Sydney for the same reasons they live in Melbourne: work, study and family, in the newest and most affordable suburbs of a fast growing city. Early Sikh arrivals reached New South Wales in the colonial era as labourers and traders, but migration restrictions kept numbers small for most of the 20th century. The modern community grew with skilled migration, international students and family reunion, above all after 2000, and it settled where new housing estates were rising: Sydney's northwest and southwest. Sydney is listed under Punjabi places in Australia.
What do the numbers say?
Greater Sydney counted 5,231,147 people in the 2021 census, with a median age of 37. India was one of the city's largest countries of birth, with 187,810 residents, 3.6 per cent of Greater Sydney, born in India. For the Punjabi language itself, this entry states the limit of the headline table plainly: the Australian Bureau of Statistics QuickStats list of Greater Sydney's most used languages other than English is led by Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese and Hindi, and Punjabi does not appear in that top five, so no Greater Sydney Punjabi total is invented here.
The regional tables tell the real story. In the Blacktown region of Sydney's northwest, the census counted 20,761 people using Punjabi at home, 5.2 per cent of the region, making Punjabi the most used language other than English there, ahead of Hindi, in a region where 48,549 residents, 12.1 per cent, were born in India. In the suburb of Quakers Hill, inside that region, Punjabi was also the top language other than English: 1,956 people, 7.0 per cent, and Sikhs numbered 1,753, 6.3 per cent of the suburb. In the Kellyville Ridge and The Ponds area, among the newest suburbs of the northwest, 1,074 people used Punjabi at home, 5.1 per cent. Across New South Wales as a whole, 53,460 people used Punjabi at home, and the state counted 47,165 Sikhs, of whom 38,713 lived in Greater Sydney: New South Wales holds the second largest Sikh population in Australia after Victoria.
Blacktown, The Ponds and the northwest
Punjabi Sydney has a clear centre of gravity: the Blacktown area of the northwest. Around Blacktown, The Ponds, Quakers Hill, Glenwood and Parklea, Punjabi is heard in the shopping centres, the new housing estates and the school gates, and Punjabi shops, grocers, restaurants and services line the main roads. A second, older centre sits in the southwest around Austral and Leppington, where market gardens and small farms gave early families a foothold and the community built one of its first temples. Students and professionals spread Punjabi life across the whole city, but the northwest and southwest are where a visitor hears the language on the street.
Gurdwaras: Glenwood, Revesby and Austral
The Australian Sikh Association runs the Gurdwara Sahib at Glenwood, on Meurants Lane in the Blacktown area: the association describes itself as the largest registered not for profit body of Sikhs in the Southern Hemisphere, and its Glenwood centre serves the Sikh community of Greater Western and North Western Sydney with prayer halls, langar sewa, a library and schools. In the inner southwest, the Sri Guru Singh Sabha gurdwara at Revesby describes itself as the first Sikh worship place in Sydney, and it has run a Punjabi school with volunteer teachers for many years. In the outer southwest, the Sikh Mission Centre at 170 Ninth Avenue in Austral holds regular congregations, kirtan and daily prayers, with free langar in its communal kitchen, run by volunteers. Together with smaller gurdwaras and sangats across the metropolitan area, they carry the standard work of Punjabi institutions in Australia: worship, langar open to all, Punjabi and religious teaching for children, and support for new arrivals finding their feet in a new country.
Sydney is Australia's harbour city and its biggest, and its Punjabi community mirrors the city's own growth: counted suburb by suburb in the census rather than in one headline figure, strongest in Blacktown and the northwest, and served by two of the country's best known gurdwaras.
