Where is Jatri?

Jatri is a village of Talwandi Sabo tehsil in Bathinda district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Maur, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Maur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035875, and it covers 385 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,181 people in Jatri: 656 men and 525 women, living in 230 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 385 hectares, the population density works out to about 307 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 800 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 100, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 385 people, about 33 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 62.63 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.48 per cent and women at 50.52 per cent. The census recorded 584 workers, about 49 per cent of the village. Of the 384 main workers, the largest group, 257, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 99 agricultural labourers and 22 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 200 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (343 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (10 hectares). About 30 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 361 cultivators and 184 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
