Where is Chak Khundwala?

Chak Khundwala is a village in Jalalabad tehsil of Fazilka district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Jalalabad, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Jalalabad community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034977, and it covers 408 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 964 people in Chak Khundwala: 501 men and 463 women, living in 171 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 408 hectares, the population density works out to about 236 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 924 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 94, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 459 people, about 48 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 75.98 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.56 per cent and women at 67.86 per cent. The census recorded 406 workers, about 42 per cent of the village. Of the 363 main workers, the largest group, 160, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 151 agricultural labourers and 48 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 43 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (352 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 161 cultivators and 184 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
