Where is Chak Phala?

Chak Phala is a village in Dasua tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 17 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dasua community development block and is served by the Chak--Phala gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031027, and it covers 121 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 363 people in Chak Phala: 197 men and 166 women, living in 69 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 121 hectares, the population density works out to about 300 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 843 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 40, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 111 people, about 31 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.54 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 90.75 per cent and women at 86 per cent. The census recorded 102 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 31 main workers, the largest group, 18, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 13 cultivators on their own land. A further 71 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Chak Phala's land. Of the village's 121 hectares, 80 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 12 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (8 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (4 hectares). About 41 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 25 cultivators and 35 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Dasua, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Basa, Dholia, Bisso Chak and Badla.
