Where is Chak Phullu?

Chak Phullu is a village of Garhshankar tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Garhshankar, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Garhshankar community development block and is served by the Chak--Phullu gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032048, and it covers 114 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,350 people in Chak Phullu: 666 men and 684 women, living in 286 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 114 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,184 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1027 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 153, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 841 people, about 62 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 77.61 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.39 per cent and women at 71.99 per cent. The census recorded 418 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 320 main workers, the largest group, 188, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 76 agricultural labourers and 49 cultivators on their own land. A further 98 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (100 hectares). About 13 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
