Dera Bassi is a historic town at Punjab's border with Haryana, once part of Kalsia State — its Mughal-era fort ruins still stand. It passed through PEPSU (1948) and Patiala district (1953) before joining Mohali district in 2006. Today it is an industrial belt on the Chandigarh–Ambala highway. The municipal council counted about 26,300 residents in 2011.

History
Dera Bassi is a town of the old princely order. It was part of Kalsia State — the Sikh princely state founded by the Sandhu Jat chiefs, with its capital at Chhachhrauli — and the town's Mughal-era fort ruins predate even that, a reminder that this border town has been fought over for centuries. The Ghaggar river flows nearby, marking the old boundary lines that armies once crossed. The Kalsia rulers held Dera Bassi through the nineteenth century as the British settled the cis-Sutlej states around them.
Independence redrew its map repeatedly: Kalsia merged into PEPSU in 1948, PEPSU merged into Punjab in 1956 (Dera Bassi joining Patiala district), and in 2006 the town was transferred to the newly created SAS Nagar (Mohali) district. Each transfer pulled it closer to Chandigarh's orbit — and to the highway economy. The Lalru–Dera Bassi industrial belt is now one of the Tricity's main manufacturing zones, and the town's old core and new factories sit side by side, a small-town past next to a logistics-park future.
Geography & people
Dera Bassi sits on the Chandigarh–Ambala highway (NH-152), at Punjab's border with Haryana, about 20 kilometres from Chandigarh — close enough that the Tricity's sprawl has begun to merge with its own. The 2011 census counted 26,295 residents in the municipal council. The town is religiously mixed — Sikh, Hindu and Muslim — and linguistically mixed too, with Punjabi and Hindi both in daily use. Its economy is industrial: factories, warehouses and logistics parks line the highway, serving the Tricity and the Delhi–Amritsar corridor. Migrants from across North India work in its plants, giving the old Kalsia town a cosmopolitan workforce.
Places of interest
The Mughal-era fort ruins are Dera Bassi's heritage landmark. At Mukandpur, on the town's edge, the Kethlo Tirath — also called Kunti Kund — is a historic sacred tank associated with the Mahabharata's Kunti, drawing pilgrims. The town's old bazaar preserves the princely-town layout, while the highway strip is pure twenty-first century: factories, malls and the logistics parks of an industrial belt.
Notable people
The Kalsia rulers — the Sandhu chiefs who held Dera Bassi through the nineteenth century from their capital at Chhachhrauli — are the town's historical figures, and their state's records are the town's earliest modern documents. In the modern era its name is carried by its industrialists and by Ravi Sher Singh, the area's noted political figure. Dera Bassi's story, though, is collective: a border town remade by every administrative redrawing of Punjab.
