Where is Faridkot district?

Faridkot district is a compact district in the Malwa region of south west Punjab, India, with its headquarters at Faridkot city. It covers 1,458 square kilometres and counted 617,508 people in Census 2011. Named for the Sufi saint Baba Farid, it is known for its princely past, its cotton fields and its medical university.

The district sits on the flat Punjab plain between Ferozepur to the north west, Moga and Ludhiana to the north east, and Bathinda and Sangrur to the south. The Census counted two tahsils, Faridkot and Jaitu, two development blocks, three towns and 171 villages, of which 163 were inhabited. In 2011 about 64.9 percent of its people lived in villages and 35.1 percent in towns, so this remains a farming district with strong market towns.

Faridkot city also heads the Faridkot Division, created in 1996, which brings together Faridkot, Bathinda and Mansa districts. For a visitor the district reads in three parts: the headquarters city with its fort and colleges, the cotton town of Kotkapura, and Jaitu, remembered across Punjab for a landmark Akali struggle.

Baba Farid, Mokalhar and the princely state

The District Census Handbook traces the name to the headquarters town founded by Mokalsi, grandson of Raja Manj, who ruled this territory in the thirteenth century and built a fort here. Among the labourers pressed into work on the fort, the Handbook recounts, was Baba Farid himself. He was seen to have miraculous powers, shown among other ways by baskets of mud that floated above his head without visible support, and he was allowed to depart. The place was then renamed Faridkot after him, and it stayed the capital under Mokalsi and his sons Jairsi and Wairsi.

That story is local tradition, told here as the Census Handbook tells it. Baba Farid, the Sufi saint of Pakpattan whose verses are preserved in the Guru Granth Sahib, gives Faridkot a place in both Sufi and Sikh memory, and his name is carried by its university, its shrines and its biggest fair.

The modern princely state took shape much later. The city history records that Hamir Singh laid the foundation of the modern state in 1763, that the city passed briefly under Maharaja Ranjit Singh from 1807 to 1809 before being restored to the Brar family through British intervention, and that it then continued as the capital of Faridkot State under British suzerainty until 1947. In 1948 the state joined the Patiala and East Punjab States Union, known as PEPSU.

Faridkot became a district on 7 August 1972, carved out of the Faridkot tehsil of old Bathinda district together with the Moga and Muktsar tehsils of Ferozepur. In November 1995 it was divided three ways when Muktsar and Moga became districts, leaving the present compact district. Kotkapura, its second town, was founded by Kapura in 1661 and takes its name from his fort, kot meaning a small fort.

Jaito, Gangsar and the morcha of 1924

Jaitu, also written Jaito, is a flourishing market town in the south of the district, and in 1923 and 1924 it became the scene of one of the defining agitations of the Gurdwara Reform Movement. The Sikh encyclopaedia account explains that the campaign followed the forced abdication of the Maharaja of Nabha and the interruption, on 14 September 1923, of an akhand path, the continuous recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib, at Gurdwara Gangsar Sahib in Jaito in sympathy with him.

Volunteer jathas marched to Jaito to resume the recitation. On 21 February 1924 a peaceful jatha of 500 Sikhs was fired upon approaching Gurdwara Tibbi Sahib, on the sandy mound where Guru Gobind Singh had stayed in 1705. Twenty one were killed and many wounded, yet the jatha reached the gurdwara. A divan is still held at Jaito on 21 February each year for those who fell, and Gurdwara Angitha Sahib marks where the martyrs were cremated.

The Census Handbook motif tells the older story behind the town: Guru Gobind Singh pitched his tent on the tibbi, had his Singhs practise archery there, and rested where Gurdwara Gangsar Sahib now stands. The agitation ended in 1925, marked by 101 akhand paths at Gangsar from 21 July to 6 August.

Cotton, canals and the Malwa plain

Faridkot is a plain district through and through. The city geography notes a low, flat depositional plain formed by the rivers of the Sutlej Ganga plain, with only 1.4 percent of its area under forest cover. The Central Ground Water Board describes the district as part of the Punjab Malwa plain, divided into sandy tracts around Sadiq in the Hathar area, sandy loam in the Uttar area around Dhudhi and Tehna, and sandy loam to loam around Jaitu, where it notes the best staple of cotton.

Water decides farming here. The Board records that groundwater under much of the district is saline, so canal water is the major source of irrigation, supplied from the Sirhind canal system through distributaries serving Faridkot, Kotkapura and Jaitu. Where fresh water lenses occur, farmers skim them with multiple well point systems. The climate is dry: a very hot summer, a short monsoon from July to mid September, and average annual rainfall of 433 millimetres, about 71 percent of it in the monsoon months. The Board gives a normal figure of 449 millimetres.

The Census worker tables show what that land supports: about 24 percent of workers in 2011 were cultivators and about 24 percent agricultural labourers. Cotton is the emblematic crop. Kotkapura was long called the City of White Gold for a cotton market once described as among the largest in Asia, and it remains a flourishing grain and cotton market. Wheat and paddy fill out the rotation.

Qila Mubarak, Tilla Baba Farid and the Aagman Purab

The building every visitor asks about first is Qila Mubarak, the Faridkot Fort in the old city. Spread over about ten acres, it was the seat of the princely state and is one of the few forts in the region still in family possession. The district government account, summarised in the fort history, credits Raja Mokalsi with the original fort, Hamir Singh with rebuilding it in 1775, and Raja Bikram Singh and Raja Balbir Singh with the present main structure, built in 1890. Inside its bastioned walls stand the Durbar Hall, the royal palace, the Tosha Khana and Modi Khana, the treasury, and the Shish Mahal above the gateway, whose Chitrashala room carries murals by Pahari artists from the late nineteenth century.

The fort also carries a warning: it stood closed for decades while ownership was disputed in court, and much of it is in poor condition. A 2022 court ruling settled ownership in favour of the two daughters of the last ruler, Raja Harinder Singh. Visitors should expect to admire the gate and walls from the heritage street nearby rather than a fully opened museum.

Baba Farid memory is lived, not only built. Gurdwara Tilla Baba Farid marks where, in local tradition, the saint stayed, and every September the district celebrates the Baba Farid Aagman Purab festival for about a week. The district programme opens with an akhand path on 21 September, continues with a nagar kirtan on 22 September from Gurdwara Tilla Sahib to Gurdwara Mai Godri, and adds a book exhibition, heritage walk, kavi darbar, folk dances and sports from gatka and kabaddi to hockey and wrestling. It is the best week to see the district at full stretch.

A medical university town and getting there

What Faridkot city is known for across Punjab today is medicine. Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, established in July 1998 under Punjab Act No. 18, is headquartered here and affiliates medical, dental, nursing, physiotherapy and pharmacy colleges across the state, including Guru Gobind Singh Medical College in Faridkot itself. The city account dates that college to 1978 and also lists the Dasmesh Institute of Research and Dental Sciences, Government Brijindra College from 1942, and a government college of education from 1945. Students and patients from across Malwa pass through for its classrooms and wards.

Getting there is straightforward. Faridkot railway station lies on the Bathinda to Ferozepur line, and the district headquarters sits on the Firozpur, Bathinda and Delhi railway route, with Kotkapura and Jaitu also linked by rail and road. By road, National Highway 54 serves the city, and the Census Handbook gives the road distances that still orient a trip: Ferozepur 32 kilometres, Sri Muktsar Sahib 45 kilometres, Bathinda 65 kilometres and Chandigarh 218 kilometres. The district administration lists Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at Amritsar as the nearest international airport, about 130 kilometres away by its road account.

Plan a visit around September for the Aagman Purab, give the fort and Tilla Baba Farid a slow morning, and use Kotkapura for its markets and Jaitu for Gangsar and Tibbi Sahib. A Sufi name, a princely fort, an Akali morcha and a medical university all sit within a short drive of each other.
