Where is Aulakh?

Aulakh is a village of Kot Kapura tehsil in Faridkot district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kot Kapura, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kot Kapura community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035584, and it covers 1,278 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,829 people in Aulakh: 1,981 men and 1,848 women, living in 767 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 1,278 hectares, the population density works out to about 300 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 933 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 440, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,068 people, about 28 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.29 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 66.9 per cent and women at 59.46 per cent. The census recorded 1,553 workers, about 41 per cent of the village. Of the 1,436 main workers, the largest group, 606, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 427 agricultural labourers and 389 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 117 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Aulakh's land. Of the village's 1,278 hectares, 1,186 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (1,186 hectares). About 92 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 613 cultivators and 437 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school and one government secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 10. The village also had an anganwadi centre.

The village had its own post office. It also had mobile phone coverage and an internet common service centre. Banking was available in the village itself, with a cooperative bank branch. Kot Kapura, the tehsil headquarters, and Faridkot town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Deviwala, Kot Kapura Rural and Jeonwala.
