Where is Chet Singhwala?

Chet Singhwala is a village in Faridkot tehsil of Faridkot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Faridkot, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Faridkot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035489, and it covers 407 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,212 people in Chet Singhwala: 630 men and 582 women, living in 232 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 407 hectares, the population density works out to about 298 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 924 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 141, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 654 people, about 54 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 65.64 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.66 per cent and women at 56.92 per cent. The census recorded 712 workers, about 59 per cent of the village. Of the 300 main workers, the largest group, 124, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 97 other workers in trade, transport and services and 66 agricultural labourers. A further 412 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (360 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (10 hectares). About 26 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 134 cultivators and 137 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
